Zegyo Market, Mandalay

(3.3/5 based on 20+ reviews on the web)
Zegyo Market, located in downtown Mandalay, is the oldest and most important market in Mandalay.HistoryZegyo Market, covering 12 acres, was founded during the reign of King Mindon. It was a principal distribution center for beans, citrus fruit, cotton, nuts, onions, rice, tobacco and wheat as well as the main market for jewellery and handicrafts such as silver and gold embroidery. The market was totally destroyed by fire in 1897, and rebuilt in 1903 with a masonry structure designed by an Italian, Count Conte Calderari. In the 1990s, the colonial era structure was pulled down and replaced with a Chinese-style shopping center.

  • An old and somehow crumbling building with hundreds of stalls with everyday stuff, filled with locals, a real shopping experience in Mandalay, close to the street fruit market, not far from the rayway...  more »
  • A lot of things in this market. The Bogyoke market is a craft market in the heart of the city of Rangoon. It is fairly extensive and leaves room for more than 2000 commerccants. It is the equivalent of Chatuchak market in bangkok. Traders tend to increase the asking price. So essential negotiations! I

  • We got out there randomly. The market is huge, 3 floors, the largest selection of Longyi's (wrap-around skirt), I've seen. There's no tourists, only traders who buy for their stores. Very original and exciting. Paid a longyi for 2800 ky bought - in Yangon for three times
