Mahamuni Pagoda, Mandalay
(4.4/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
An imposing gilt mountain-temple with arched walls painted red, gold, and white, Mahamuni Pagoda features the most revered Buddha image in Myanmar. Believed to have been made during Buddha's lifetime, the 3.8 m (12.5 ft) high statue sits on a tall pedestal and weighs 6.5 tons; over the ages, countless gold leaves pasted by devotees have in fact disfigured the statue. Admire its golden crown decorated with diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, and the spectacular seven-tiered roof rising above. The 18th-century temple grounds also house a museum of history of Buddhism. • This pagoda is the largest place of worship in Mandalay with the town centre 4 meter tall Buddha, brought here in 1784 by King Bodawpaya. Faithful men go to pray near the statue and stick on the same gold leaf; women, however, for the country's religious rule, they cannot access the central area for their gold leaves are attached by a gentleman of the pagoda. Since 1984 to now the weight of gold leaf stuck in the calves of the statue is about two tons, so it seems that the Buddha is suffering from elephantiasis. In the courtyard next to the pagoda, in an ad hoc, are preserved some Hindu bronze statues brought here from Angkor Wat (Thailand) as war trophies. Like almost all pagodas to enter a long corridor where on both sides you will find souvenir shops and other local handicrafts. I have to say that this diminishes somewhat the charm of the holy place.

  • built under King Bodawpaya in 1784. The original shrine was destroyed by fire in 1884, the present shrine is so recent. In it, the Mahamuni is housed image in 1784 was transported to Mandalay from Mrauk U. The four-meter-high image is made of bronze and inspired devout Buddhisten-was covered with a 15 cm thick layer of gold over the past few years. In the courtyard, six Khmer figures in bronze, located the Mrauk U and originally from Angkor Wat (Cambodia) to acquired Mandalay. + I'm glad that the head was saved + fascinating architecture - many tourists
