  • We walked to this place as opposed to most visitors who come with a tour bus. So we were able to see how much of a show it is. When a bus pulls up, the staff all start pounding on the gold. As soon as...  more »
  • While making the gold leaf is widespread in Burma, the inhabitants will then paste them on the Buddha. But this small shop that makes the old are especially for tourists, who will pay in gold (bad pun) their sheet. In short, why not, but avoid buying, we find cheaper elsewhere. And ask a Burmese to buy it at your place.

  • As a group, we were given a brief explanation about the craft of gold hitting /-hammer. It was also clear that this craft, even if it is supported here state, can still lead only a niche existence. What a pity... From Europe, it is known that a mechanically supported production takes place for the niche. A wide range of products in the showrooms invites you to purchase; price it seemed attractive, but rather quite high. It is then any left to take with a sweetheart...

  • A fascinating look at an age old technique for making gold leaf. It will blow your mind when you see the effort required to produce one tiny sheet of gold leaf and then you think of the sheer volume of gold leaf needed for just one pagoda or huge Buddha statue.
  • Quite an interesting place where you can see the gold leaf making. From the process of making bamboo sheets to making gold leaf and then preparing stacks, all of it can be seen here. You can shop some souvenirs as well.
  • You get to learn the process of gold leaf production and watch them make it. It's quite interesting. They'll bring you here if you join one of the private or group tours around Mandalay.
  • Okay place. Guess the best that you can get in Mandalay. I review the Gold Leaf Hotel..Not the museum..
  • As you arrive someone will approach to explain how gold leaf making works, while you observe the workers at their jobs (for free). There's a big gift shop, with things to buy at a range of price points, and you don't feel too pressured to buy anything -- but to be honest we did, as the guide was very nice and also who can resist buying a tiny gold bear.

Where to stay in Mandalay

Look at the area to the southwest of the royal palace for the main choice of accommodations in Mandalay. Some cushier options sit on the main thoroughfares, offering rooms with balconies overlooking the core architectural and historic sights. A number of basic hotels lie close to the main train station, while budget-friendly guesthouses concentrate in the area around 25th Street. Farther to the west, some hotels have views of the river, while to the east lie lodgings with convenient proximity to major regional highways.
