Shwezigon Paya, Bagan
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Built at the end of the 11th century by the father of the Burmese nation, King Anawrahta, Shwezigon Paya represents a priceless reliquary and pilgrimage center for thousands of Buddhist devotees. The holy site enshrines a collection of sacred relics, including Buddha's collarbone, tooth, and emerald images imported from China. The cone-shaped pagoda with five terraces has endured many earthquakes and natural disasters throughout history, but it was restored several times and, until recently, reinforced with 30,000 copper plates for better protection. Head inside to witness the inscribed pillars, golden bell, shrines with Gupta-style statues of Buddha, and the hall of 37 nats (revered spirits). Beware of ticket scalpers at the entrance, as they can get pushy and distractive. A visit to Shwezigon Paya represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Bagan vacation generator to plot your vacation.

Shewzigon is easily the best of the Pagodas in Bagan. Although the top half of the Pagoda was covered as part of the renovation, we could rest & marvel at the rest of the impressive Pagoda. This one i... read more »

As there are thousands of temples scattered throughout the city, even better is to visit by bike or motorcycle, that can be rented to 1 or even 5 dollars, and the bikes are cheaper. The Shwezigon Pagoda is one of the most famous. Its golden colour differs from the ruins of temples that make up the region. The bright sun and the River at the bottom of this temple complete the picture. Is a good place for a pit stop to recharge, as there are some stores with trade right next to this holy place. And remember to remove the shoes, but retain the right not to get lost in the middle of so many pairs that are at the entrance of the temple.show original
A large golden appearance to very visible. Park e-BIKE at the parking entrance is slightly confusing, and without it you will be beckoned. Passages open more holes and go from there side of the souvenir shop, sandals souvenir shop the last souvenir placement will be. During the visit, these flower-pushers and little attention is required. Well, amount, might not, let her buy.show original
