Shwezigon Paya, Bagan

4.3
#4 of 31 in Historic Sites in Bagan
Built at the end of the 11th century by the father of the Burmese nation, King Anawrahta, Shwezigon Paya represents a priceless reliquary and pilgrimage center for thousands of Buddhist devotees. The holy site enshrines a collection of sacred relics, including Buddha's collarbone, tooth, and emerald images imported from China. The cone-shaped pagoda with five terraces has endured many earthquakes and natural disasters throughout history, but it was restored several times and, until recently, reinforced with 30,000 copper plates for better protection. Head inside to witness the inscribed pillars, golden bell, shrines with Gupta-style statues of Buddha, and the hall of 37 nats (revered spirits). Beware of ticket scalpers at the entrance, as they can get pushy and distractive. A visit to Shwezigon Paya represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Bagan vacation generator to plot your vacation.

It is a temple of gilded in Bagan. I think she Dagon Pagoda in Yangon and I like it. And is lit up at night is beautiful. So wet a gilded Buddha statue, will sell the gold leaf Lady's attention. (Is there no nag. ) Are in front of the Temple of voice is bigger and comes to solicit a strong Lady. Let's explore the Evita who parked beside the main road of the temple across the Causeway.

Passed the initial astonishment, I recommend wandering calmly and discover the spaces less frequented by tourists. I found most interesting small temples on the side rather than the grandeur of the huge golden Golden stupa in the middle. Do not recommend to arrive from the south entrance, where the souvenir vendors are nagging

It is the first pagoda which you are entering from the North of the archaeological site, Nyang-u. Similar to Shwedagon, but smaller, it has a stupa gilded in the Center and smaller ones surrounding it. There are a few precious prints on one of the stupas with the stories and teachings of Buddha. A good way to introduce the visit to this wonderful and amazing archaeological site of Bagan.

Where to stay in Bagan

Bagan accommodations try their best to fit in with the atmosphere of spirituality and mystery that clings to the temple town. As such, you won't find any high-rise hotels here. Instead, a number of squat wooden lodges, converted traditional houses, and new boutique resorts (all pretty low to the ground) provide the main options for those staying in town. Among them, you'll find some that offer a slightly better range of facilities--including well-maintained pools and restaurants--and others that offer basic dormitory accommodation.
