Outdoor Activity Beach / Pool Club
Absorb the peaceful surroundings of Shwe-gyu-gyi, a 12th-century Indian temple boasting mixtures of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Stone slabs bearing ancient inscriptions suggest that the holy structure took seven months to complete. It consists of three buildings featuring spires reaching for the sky. The main building sits upon a 3 m (12 ft) tall foundation. Step through its famous wooden carved doors to find a brightly lit interior, illuminated with natural light from eleven arched windows and wide-open corridors. Climb to the top floor and out onto the terrace to enjoy magnificent views of pristine scenery. Footwear is not allowed inside. • There are several levels to this temple and it is a good one to start your exploring at as it also gives you great views over the plains of Bagan and the many temples that are here. Go up to the top l...  more »

  • I visited in the morning. Again, stone and hot were less likely to burn the soles of the feet. In Bagan, view from the rooftop was excellent. It was felt during the day good and locals were sleeping in front of the Buddha!

  • It's really nice and its colour makes it stand out. Usually pretty quiet.
  • Not a lot of people. I think this would be a good spot to watch the sunrise as an alternative to the shwesandaw.
  • 'Golden Cave Temple', a small compact temple near the old Bagan palace, built by King Alaungsithu who was killed by his own son, King Narathu.
  • An enjoyable temple to visit and probably the best after you visit those popular temples around as this temple is surrounded by those popular ones. You can see Dhammayangyi and Shwesandaw at the southeast, Ananda at the east, and Thatbyinnyu at the south and sunset in the west if you arrive at the right time.
  • Amazing collection of temples built over hundreds of years. Best seen by renting electric bikes. There is a very expensive morning hot air balloon ride but seemed to only last less than 20 minutes

Where to stay in Bagan

Bagan accommodations try their best to fit in with the atmosphere of spirituality and mystery that clings to the temple town. As such, you won't find any high-rise hotels here. Instead, a number of squat wooden lodges, converted traditional houses, and new boutique resorts (all pretty low to the ground) provide the main options for those staying in town. Among them, you'll find some that offer a slightly better range of facilities--including well-maintained pools and restaurants--and others that offer basic dormitory accommodation.
