Dhammayan Gyi Temple, Bagan

Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Discover the dark history of Dhammayan Gyi Temple, dating back to the 12th century. Built by a king who killed his own brother and father to get the throne, the temple has a sinister reputation and the locals often avoid it. Nonetheless, the temple--the largest in the country--affords scenic views if you climb to its upper floors. Walk the long hallways and admire the vast space of the temple, noting the two statues of Gautama and Maitreya. The high ceiling makes the building a perfect nesting spot for bats. Bring a face mask as the place isn't cleaned regularly. Using our international travel planner, Bagan attractions like Dhammayan Gyi Temple can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • The temple complex with its labyrinth of passageways was built over the 1167 to 1170 period under orders of King Narathu, but never completed due to the assassination of the king. Impressive...  more »
  • This is supposed to be the largest temple in Bagan. After walking through the temple, it is a bit boring. It is not large, when compared against the temples in Siem Reap, Cambodia.  more »
  • This temple is also unfinished and it more than 800 years ago. It is quite beautiful from inside. Something different from the normal.  more »

  • The biggest temple in Bagan with interesting story. King Narathu built the temple for his sin of killing his father and brother. It is a picturesque place in Bagan and there is a puppet shop with many puppets hanging on the tree. It's also a good place to take pictures.
  • One of the beautiful but said to be the tallest of the archaeological set of Buddhist Pagoda in Bagan. The renovation work is in progress. The entire building of the Pagoda could be captured only on climbing an elevated mound at the Fringe of the complex.the best age can be obtained at the dawn when the Sun rays are not in higher degree !
  • Beautiful temple with an entrance for two Buddha. People in myanmar believe this temple is bad luck. The king who build this unfinished temple killed his father and brother. The king then killed his wife and the architects of the temple because the fall in love. That is why the temple is unfinished (no umbrella at the top). Ask a local for the whole story. ;)
  • Good place to visit. But don't buy the Sand Painting from the seller at the corner inner pagoda..they will sell the painting on expensive 10 times overprice! You should buy from seller at the inner west gate of pagoda, you have to let them follow your walk until the exit gate(North gate), Then they will offer to deal the price of painting at 10,000 Kyats. Deal the 10,000 Kyats price, that's the best fair price! ?
  • The biggest pagoda in Bagan. I’d suggest to visit in the afternoon because the sun rays so magical impacting the surroundings
