Buphaya Paya, Bagan

3.3
#9 of 52 in Sightseeing in Bagan
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Visit the oldest pagoda in Bagan, Buphaya Paya. Legend says that the king, having destroyed gourds (an infectuous plant) from the riverbanks, built the pagoda in the shape of that plant to celebrate his achievement. Take a look at the bulbous shape of the gilded dome, and experience the view, since the temple overlooks the river. Today's pagoda represents a reconstruction from 1975; the original was destroyed in an earthquake. Where to stay in Bagan

Bagan accommodations try their best to fit in with the atmosphere of spirituality and mystery that clings to the temple town. As such, you won't find any high-rise hotels here. Instead, a number of squat wooden lodges, converted traditional houses, and new boutique resorts (all pretty low to the ground) provide the main options for those staying in town. Among them, you'll find some that offer a slightly better range of facilities--including well-maintained pools and restaurants--and others that offer basic dormitory accommodation.

  • Buphaya Paya is very crowded and nothing special at all. For us even the view of the Ayerawaddy river was average – low water level, lots of garbage. Go somewhere else instead.  more »

  • One of old Bagan's oldest phayas or stupas. Bu Paya is egg shaped and overlooks the mighty Irawwady River. It's great to go here early in the morning when the crowd isn't that many.
  • Lovely to see this Site. It overlooks the river for great pics. Eating places all around for that pit stop
  • Beside the Irrawaddy river. Good sunset view at late evening. About 5.5 km from Bagan Myothit.
  • Great views over the river.
  • 'Gourd' pagoda, rebuilt after 1975 earthquake.
