Buphaya Paya, Bagan

3.5
Visit the oldest pagoda in Bagan, Buphaya Paya. Legend says that the king, having destroyed gourds (an infectuous plant) from the riverbanks, built the pagoda in the shape of that plant to celebrate his achievement. Take a look at the bulbous shape of the gilded dome, and experience the view, since the temple overlooks the river. Today's pagoda represents a reconstruction from 1975; the original was destroyed in an earthquake. Buphaya Paya is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Bagan Edition.

  • Everyone who ever was into Bagan, knows the question: where is the most beautiful sunset? Here is a good place for the Buphaya Paya. Not so overrun, like in other places, you can see the Sun beyond the Ayeyarwaddy River behind the chain of hills disappear. The golden dome in Mystic light and the Sun.

  • This pagoda was built as a trade mark showing this place is Bagan for ancient traders. Earliest Pyu-styled small pagoda is giving good views and breeze as located on the bank of the river. And it is g...  more »
  • Gilded stupas, majestic Ayeyarwady River landscapes, and pitting down not to be missed (Dharma). I think a very photogenic spot. I recommend is kinda hot, the dazed and watching the river flow.

  • Nice place to watch sunset. It's crowded though. It might be peaceful during morning and day. Near the temple you can take a boat on Irrawaddy River
  • This temple was a little disappointing. There is not much to see and its also not a quiet atmosphere. However, if you come to enjoy a good view if the river it might be a good place, especially during sunset.
  • Strange design among the other pagodas located at river bank. This is new structure and original one is collapsed by earthquake in 1975.
  • The sunset view is very nice.
  • One of the oldest pagoda in bagan. More than 1800 years ago

Where to stay in Bagan

Bagan accommodations try their best to fit in with the atmosphere of spirituality and mystery that clings to the temple town. As such, you won't find any high-rise hotels here. Instead, a number of squat wooden lodges, converted traditional houses, and new boutique resorts (all pretty low to the ground) provide the main options for those staying in town. Among them, you'll find some that offer a slightly better range of facilities--including well-maintained pools and restaurants--and others that offer basic dormitory accommodation.
