Ananda Temple, Bagan

4.6
A well-preserved masterpiece of Bagan architecture, Ananda Temple displays delicate stone-carved facades and an impressive pyramid-shape structure, with a magnificent gilted central tower that can be seen from far away. Built in 1105, this outstanding example of fine craftsmanship, a landmark of Bagan, has been well-restored, and still displays some of the original murals and stucco. Marvel at four 9.5 m (31 ft) tall gilded statues of standing Buddhas inside this simple but very large corridor temple. A popular escape from the busy city, the grandiose 53 by 53 m (174 by 174 ft) yard of the temple provides tranquility set against the tall carved cliff. Take an ox-drawn cart for a time machine trip during your visit to this must-see attraction. To visit Ananda Temple and other attractions in Bagan, use our Bagan road trip planner .

  • Impressive with 4 Golden teak Buddhas of nearly 19mt, standing in front of the 4 cardinal directions, which seems to change expression according to the point from which you look; is considered the most beautiful symmetrical architectural style masterpiece Mon and especially with the many scenes in relief in sandstone.

  • This is one of the best place and must visit in your life! I think the people in Bagan is super friendly, they love to help, honest and feel peaceful. I met many people in different temple, and I chat with many child, they even feel so tired after asking money, I really l want to help them with some move. I recommend everyone come here, just take the scooter and hang around, even the small temple is beautiful, no need go to big one because it is so crowded, but you can visit of course. I recommend everyone come here! you feel the life is amazing.
  • Absolutely a must. Unique from outside with distinctive shining top and unusual indoor with massive 4 Buddha sculptures and dozens of others placed in neat niches. Fantastic light inside for photographers. My favorite in Bagan.
  • Inside and around Ananda Temple: The Westminster Abbey of Myanmar. The Buddhist temple houses four standing Buddhas, each one facing the cardinal direction of East, North, West and South. This is a very old temple. You can walk one round inside the temple. Along the walkway you can see many Windows.. of which most of them have a Buddha's statue inside. You have to walk around the temple too as the architecture of this temple is also very beautiful. Unlike the other temples.. This one is fairly white in colour rather than the earth colour. This is a must go temple. You should miss this one. The compound outside is also very big.
  • A really wonderful area. Great morning photography opportunities all round with lots of depth and atmosphere. Some real hidden gems for photos if your willing to spend your time looking
  • Wonderful place. Good for photo taking.
