Ananda Temple, Bagan
(4.6/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web)
A well-preserved masterpiece of Bagan architecture, Ananda Temple displays delicate stone-carved facades and an impressive pyramid-shape structure, with a magnificent gilted central tower that can be seen from far away. Built in 1105, this outstanding example of fine craftsmanship, a landmark of Bagan, has been well-restored, and still displays some of the original murals and stucco. Marvel at four 9.5 m (31 ft) tall gilded statues of standing Buddhas inside this simple but very large corridor temple. A popular escape from the busy city, the grandiose 53 by 53 m (174 by 174 ft) yard of the temple provides tranquility set against the tall carved cliff. Take an ox-drawn cart for a time machine trip during your visit to this must-see attraction. Put Ananda Temple and other Bagan attractions into our Bagan travel itinerary planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • This Temple is a must see. Have the locals take you through and explain the temple and what everything means. You will not be disappointed. Please note we traveled here in October 2015
  • This is a very popular temple in Old Bagan. This temple is unique in that it has a huge Buddha at each of the four entry vestibules. Two are the originals from about 900 years ago and two are only 200...  more »

  • A nice place to visit U can learn about the ancient things.... The statue of Buddha image is so amazing .... it is so high and so admirable. .... the huge doors at 4 directions are also so amazing.....
  • Another classic temple of Bagan. For an authentic experience, explore off the beaten track by bike to see some of the smaller temples. Nonetheless, be sure to spot all 4 of the Buddha figures inside.
  • Amazing temple, you need more than 1 day to discover this place
  • A real must-see for Bagan. A very large temple with excellent images of Buddha and his stories. We had a guide, so he explained a lot about this temple, the religion and the architecture. It really is the highlight of Bagan (second only to the sunrise balloon ride.) Restoration of the fresco ,(or mursls) is continuing but there are plenty too see now.
  • Beautiful exterior, but not much in the inside. I spent only 20 mins here and there was nothing else.
