Ananda Temple, Bagan

4.6
#2 of 52 in Sightseeing in Bagan
Religious Site Tourist Spot
A well-preserved masterpiece of Bagan architecture, Ananda Temple displays delicate stone-carved facades and an impressive pyramid-shape structure, with a magnificent gilted central tower that can be seen from far away. Built in 1105, this outstanding example of fine craftsmanship, a landmark of Bagan, has been well-restored, and still displays some of the original murals and stucco. Marvel at four 9.5 m (31 ft) tall gilded statues of standing Buddhas inside this simple but very large corridor temple. A popular escape from the busy city, the grandiose 53 by 53 m (174 by 174 ft) yard of the temple provides tranquility set against the tall carved cliff. Take an ox-drawn cart for a time machine trip during your visit to this must-see attraction. • The most beautiful temple in Bagan. Both on the inside and outside. The Buddha on the South side is incredibly beautiful.

  • We visited here in the late afternoon but it was still very busy. Nice grounds around the inside of the Pagoda and the 4 Buddhas and the frescos inside are very impressive. This is a much more modern ...  more »

  • Amazing old but well preserved and restored Pagoda. Careful not to trip over people who start praying in the hallway. And if you like you can (but don't have to) but gold leave to put on the Buddha statue for good luck. Salespeople are friendly and not intrusive. The walls are so thick it is very cool inside and your phone won't work :) the 4 main Buddha statues are always in light due to cleverly placed light holes in the walls.
  • Beautiful temple; is currently undergoing restoration so you can see people working hard all around the temple. There is a makeshift store selling noodles outside the temple and it's a nice experience having a bowl of noodles with the locals who come to pray.
  • Ananda Temple was build by King Kyanzittha since 1105 AD. It's a full of art in whole temple. it's a good place to imagine that about ancient peoples. you can see a lot of stone craft , ancient painting arts. It's a place that i want to live for a week or a month again.
  • Just arrived back from there. It's my 2nd visit . This temple is beautiful and amazing it's one of the most surviving masterpiece of the Mon architecture. Also known as the finest, largest, best preserved and most revered of the Bagan temples.
  • Beautiful temple, must visit when you're in Bagan.

Where to stay in Bagan

Bagan accommodations try their best to fit in with the atmosphere of spirituality and mystery that clings to the temple town. As such, you won't find any high-rise hotels here. Instead, a number of squat wooden lodges, converted traditional houses, and new boutique resorts (all pretty low to the ground) provide the main options for those staying in town. Among them, you'll find some that offer a slightly better range of facilities--including well-maintained pools and restaurants--and others that offer basic dormitory accommodation.
