Kasbah du Pacha el Glaoui, Telouet

#4 of 17 in Historic Sites in Souss-Massa-Draa Region
Delve into the world of the Lord of the Atlas at Kasbah du Pacha el Glaoui, home to T'hami el Glaoui, the early 20th century governor of Marrakesh and his family. This architectural site with several treed patios was T'hami el Mezouari's family residence from where he ruled the country as a warlord and chieftain of the Glaoua tribe between 1912 and 1956. Overlooking the Imarene River, the residence features typical local and Andalusian-style décor with ornate rooms that showcase the site's former luxury. Explore crumbling passageways and maze-like corridors. The entrance is guarded, but you can ask the guard at the entrance to open the residence and give you a tour (for an adequate tip). • Located Atelouet on the road to the caravans of salt who joined the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, the kasbah is partially in ruins. What's left is amazing with huge bathrooms in the upper levels. It is worth to stop in this place which played a very important role in the history of the Morocco.

  • Thami El Glaoui, the Pasha of Marrakech, was an ally of Marshal Lyautey in French politics of the protectorate at the beginning of the 20th century. Its history is exciting and violent at the same time. It was, before the independence of the Morocco, originally of the departure of Mohammed V and its replacement by a sultan who was to be his forced. But the independence party of Istiqlal was the strongest and the France, under pressure, has to do to return Mohammed V, signing the end of the power of the Glaoui who gave allegiance to the new King of the now independent countries. He died soon after. We learn everything it by visiting the ruins of the Kasbah of Telouet, his main stronghold where its people including rançonnaient Caravans passing the col de Tichka. Very interesting visit!
