Ostrog Monastery, Niksic

4.5
Carved almost entirely into a mountain cliff and famoud for miraculous occurrences, Ostrog Monastery serves as one of the world's most-visited Christian destinations. Founded in the 17th century, the site features an Orthodox monastery complex and chapels inside caves. See the Holy Trinity Church, with an interior covered in colorful paintings from top to bottom, and view the remains of 27 World War II soldiers in the Church of Saint Stanko the Martyr. Visit the Upper Church, which emerges out of a cliff and is a world-famous intercession site. The site houses vivid tile icons from 1655, a prayer book from 1732, and decorated candlesticks from 1779. • The monastery is located on the side of the mountain ... carved in the rock. Very special. Getting to a monastery in a car is not simple. The monastery itself is very beautiful, both outside and insid...  more »
  • We had plans for a mandatory visit to this holy place. But we didn't study the reviews in advance. Do not even think to come here on Saturday and Sunday: A lot of pilgrims, you are unlikely to get inside. At the upper monastery there are two large parking lots (free of charge): one for disabled people and cars with children, the other for everyone else. From the parking to the upper monastery you can climb the stone stairs. Many people take off their shoes and go barefoot, think about what they want to ask. At the upper monastery there is a shop where you can buy crosses, prayer books and other paraphernalia. If you're on a car! Now about the road: there are two ways. But in fact an adequate way only one: to get on a highway to a turn on Bogetichi and further, carefully moving away with oncoming cars, to reach the monastery. There is a second one which costs chosen by our map mops. Don't even think about using it. We were offered to roll...

  • Very interesting, informative. The relics of Vasily Ostrozhskiy, the founder of the monastery, are kept there. Revered shrine.

  • I truly believe this place can help you find your inner peace. Everyone who is going to Montenegro should take few hours and visit it.
  • Great place to see. There is not much to look at as such but the buildings are impressive and there is a lovely view. You can walk up the stairs from the village below or drive up. You can also stay the night in 2 big dormitories. Blankets will be provided too.
  • Very steep, narrow road leads to this incredible building. There is a free parking area along the accessing road at the very top but also few hundred meters below from where pilgrims take a walk up very steep path. We were there on a workday and it was not crowded at all but I can only imagine the congestion during weekend or religious holidays.
  • Definitely a place to visit. But avoid Sundays as many local people come to pray.
  • So I will quickly explain how to get here solo and cheaply without using a tour. You need to get the train from Podgorica towards Nis and get off at Ostrog. It's 45 minutes or thereabouts. I would recommend getting the 8am train which is the first train of the day. From there its around an hour up. You follow a trail up; once you get off the train keep walking the direction the train is going in until you cross the tracks at a small wooden platform and look for the signs which I included a picture off. From there follow the obvious trail; there is also red circles to guide you. The monastery itself is really impressive. No idea how they carved it out off the rock. It is free as well. On the way back there are trains at 11:19am and 2:20pm. I got the 11:19am train which is a tad rushed but if you stayed to 2:20pm be a lot of waiting around. Either way it is worth the daytrip.
