Ostrog Monastery, Niksic

4.5
#6 of 36 in Historic Sites in Montenegro
Religious Site Church
Carved almost entirely into a mountain cliff and famoud for miraculous occurrences, Ostrog Monastery serves as one of the world's most-visited Christian destinations. Founded in the 17th century, the site features an Orthodox monastery complex and chapels inside caves. See the Holy Trinity Church, with an interior covered in colorful paintings from top to bottom, and view the remains of 27 World War II soldiers in the Church of Saint Stanko the Martyr. Visit the Upper Church, which emerges out of a cliff and is a world-famous intercession site. The site houses vivid tile icons from 1655, a prayer book from 1732, and decorated candlesticks from 1779. A visit to Ostrog Monastery represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Niksic tour planner to plot your vacation.

  • First of all, to go I advise you to take the road that leads from Danilovgrad and not the small road that leads from Niksic. Management is well signposted and is a recent and fairly wide road. She takes you up to the small Orthodox Church to the parking lot of the lower level. You can park your car at this level if you have the courage to climb on foot. In this case, I you advise to do early in the morning because even if it is shaded, it climbs well and it is soon hot. Flip-flops are to prohibit as you climb through the Woods in markets completely irregular and improvised in the rock. Similarly, on the way down it tends to drag. You can also mount everything up in car, there is a good sized parking. After a little more than 30 minutes of ascent you reach the monastery and there we were disappointed. You need to do a long tail in the Sun (45 minutes and it was hitting well, it was 11:30 approximately) to access the small chapel and once inside, you don't really have the time to watch because you're in single file. The rest is just selling icons, and others. Difficult to soak up the spiritual side of places...

  • Amazing monastery. Everyone should visit to see amazing monastery built in rocks.
  • It's amazing , can't describe in words .
  • JUST AMAZING EXPERIENCE!! SURREAL, YOU HAVE TO SEE THE MOST HOLLY PLACE ON THE EARTH. СЛАВА МУ, ВЕЛИКО ЈЕ ИМЕ ЊЕГОВО!
  • Even if your not religious it's amazing to see what they built without modern tools. The road to reach the top is a single lane two way road. The surrounding scenery is beautiful.
  • Very nice place with incredible views. There is a long walk to get there but is worth the effort.
