Citadel, Budva

4.1
Must see · Historic Site · Tourist Spot
The city's medieval castle, Citadel stands at the highest point in the area and is one of the most structurally significant medieval monuments in Montenegro. Unlike most fortifications, this citadel stands entirely on its own. Within its walls also lie the ruins of Saint Mary's church and the fort's bastions. Climb up to get superb views of Budva's beaches, houses, and hills, and have a drink or a local dish at the restaurant on the terrace. Check out the gallery at the site, which showcases books and maps of the Balkan Peninsula. Put Citadel at the forefront of your travel plans using our Budva trip builder.

  • I liked this place. It has an amazing view and 2 rooms: library and room with ships. It’s interesting to wander in it, especially when there are no tourists around  more »
  • Take a glance at one of the most interesting locations in Budva Old town, very inspiring place with a rich history. From here you will have views to remember for sure, no matter the weather is like.  more »

  • Great views, interesting architecture. The *magic* fish is there, where you can make a wish while holding on to it :) I think mine will come true very soon ;)
  • Nothing interesting except the view. Not worth the entrance fee, and the offered "free juices" are nothing than a water with not more than 1% - better not offer anything than this BS drink. The old citadel in Bar was much more big and cool.
  • I love the place because it's unique and have great view of the old town and a part of the new town. You can enjoy there and make pictures for sure of the breathtaking clear sea... Budva also have lots of beautiful places, that you have to come and explore them. 🤗
  • The Budva Citadel is ancient and beautiful, and set at the highest point of the town itself. Thought to have been built atop the Budva ancient Acropolis, the views from within the citadel are unequalled, showcasing the tremendous splendour of one of Montenegro's most celebrated locations. The Citadel was built in 1936 by the Austrian Army, in order to house the hoards of troops that were stationed at the coast during WW2, and is not only a tourist attraction due to its privileged viewpoint. It is also the location of the town museum, and a stately library, which are both open to the public.
  • 3.5 euro for entry - but you get free postcard - so you save 0.5. if you are into postcards. otherwise, its going up for the view. place closes at 4pm. but in winter, you will see sunset around this time. its pretty nice. If you're a tourist, worth paying a visit. There are also small exhibitions downstairs. Caretaker has limited english.
