The State Department Store, Ulaanbaatar

4.0
#2 of 8 in Shopping in Mongolia
Gift & Specialty Shop Shopping
Shop in a landmark building at The State Department Store, a modern shopping center that's the largest and reportedly most luxurious store in Mongolia. Established in 1921 as the Central Store in the country, the store today features a variety of international brands and local products such as cashmere and camel leather. You'll also find a number of services like goldsmiths, seamstresses, beauty parlors, laundries, and dry cleaning. There is a diverse and affordable food court, plus a supermarket on the ground floor; find souvenir shops on the 5th floor. • Huge Mall in the heart of the city, where you will find everything: from the classical souvenirs, food and clothes to electronics until ... Certainly worth a visit, which will last a few hours considering the five floors very dense shops building.

  • Big department store has all the typical brands. The top floor has Mongolian souvenirs and trinkets. The prices are higher than you will find in a local market, but the quality is probably a little better and the products seem to actually be made in Mongol and not China. There is also a book store on the top floor.
  • New cars, electronics, furniture, clothes, toys, housewares, groceries, it's all here! It's a must visit destination. Need to recharge your minutes or a mobile SIM card? Go to the Mobi store inside. Mongolian Souvenirs and gifts are available on the 5th floor with great selection. 1st floor has groceries and a big selection of alcohol. This place has a lot under one roof. I spent 5 hours just looking.
  • Great department store. They have all kinds of stuff, but Mongolian store on the last floor where they sell nationally produced goods is must for all tourists to visit.
  • many things you can buy herr, can also buy the Mogolian souvenir here.
  • Things are usually a good 30% higher than other places. But, it's more expat-friendly. The supermarket on the first floor has western organic and vegan items. Get the Bonus card to get additional discounts and points. Make sure that you have purchased items before and have a receipt. Also, it costs a few thousand tugriks (I can't remember, but it was very little) when applying.

Where to stay in Ulaanbaatar

The capital city of Ulaanbaatar doesn't disappoint when it comes to its choice of accommodations, with a range of styles and types to choose from. The usual place to look lies to the northeast of the main train station, in the central district that surrounds Chinggis Khaan Square. Luxury and non-luxury chain hotels, some storied older hotels, and a variety of fairly standard options abound across this central district, close to the main urban attractions. Dotted throughout are a number of guesthouses, providing value for money mid-range and budget options, including some offering shared "gers" (traditional Mongolian sleeping tents).
