Hustai National Park, Ulaanbaatar

4.1
#1 of 12 in Wildlife in Mongolia
Observe the world's last wild horses at Hustai National Park, part of a World Heritage Site at the western edge of the Mongolian steppe. Spanning 506 sq km (195 sq mi) through the Khentii Mountains, the conservation area reintroduced the Przewalski horse, locally known as takhi, in the early 1990s. The biodiverse area includes a variety of birds, lichen, moss, and mushrooms, as well as 44 species of mammals including the Mongolian gazelle, red and roe deer, ibex, and Mongolian marmots. The Tuul River runs through the park, providing fantastic scenery and hiking opportunities. Follow well-maintained trails or explore on horseback. Some 100 km (62 mi) west of Ulaanbaatar, the park is easily accessible from the capital by bus. Nell'Hustai National park you go to see the famous takhi horses never domesticated. They were completely extinct in Mongolia, and were returned to the 1990. Now I'm a good number. The track that we cover is very beat up, but luckily we have a 4 x 4 very high, and the scenery is very nice: sweet and green hills, but without a tree or bushes. After about 10 km from the entrance to the Park we stop where we are already hold other means of tourists. We see in the distance the horses, but you can't move. Are only 7, including a colt, and are very quiet, even if they tell you that if you get too close and try to mount them begin to kick and go away. We stay a few minutes, but they leave before their

Be sure to not do this as a short few hour stop. if you have to, go in the early morning or just before sunset. Be ready for some rough driving. A camp close by is a nice place for an overnight stay. ...  more »

Where to stay in Ulaanbaatar

The capital city of Ulaanbaatar doesn't disappoint when it comes to its choice of accommodations, with a range of styles and types to choose from. The usual place to look lies to the northeast of the main train station, in the central district that surrounds Chinggis Khaan Square. Luxury and non-luxury chain hotels, some storied older hotels, and a variety of fairly standard options abound across this central district, close to the main urban attractions. Dotted throughout are a number of guesthouses, providing value for money mid-range and budget options, including some offering shared "gers" (traditional Mongolian sleeping tents).
