Gandantegchenling Monastery, Ulaanbaatar
(3.8/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
Visit a revitalized and restored Tibetan-style Buddhist compound at Gandantegchenling Monastery. Home to more than 150 monks, the suburban monastery features a residential area for religious practitioners, ornate temples, teaching centers, and a 26.5 m (87 ft) copper statue of Avalokitesvara adorned with 2,286 gems and precious stones. Although the temple escaped Stalin's mass destruction of religious institutions, worship restrictions remained in place until 1990, the end of Marxism in Mongolia. • 600 monks live in this complex. Very nice, but unfortunately poorly maintained because all the money goes in the building of large new construction. services are held at 9 am in the morning you may be present. Occasion enough to prayer wheels to spin.
