Gandantegchenling Monastery, Ulaanbaatar

3.9
#1 of 9 in Historic Sites in Mongolia
Visit a revitalized and restored Tibetan-style Buddhist compound at Gandantegchenling Monastery. Home to more than 150 monks, the suburban monastery features a residential area for religious practitioners, ornate temples, teaching centers, and a 26.5 m (87 ft) copper statue of Avalokitesvara adorned with 2,286 gems and precious stones. Although the temple escaped Stalin's mass destruction of religious institutions, worship restrictions remained in place until 1990, the end of Marxism in Mongolia. When you visit the Gandan Buddhist monastery, "the heart of Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia" can't not think about the absurdity of this monastery: there are lots of pictures, sculptures, tapestries and drawings. People bow, Kiss, make up kneels on the ground, rise and make new genuflections. I mean, idoleggiano pieces of cloth, metal or concrete. But the most absurd thing are the monks, of all ages (there are also several children), playing, reading them from a text, prayers out loud. The crazy thing is that recite in Tibetan, but neither they nor anyone who listens to understand a word they are endlessly repeated. Who knows who they are addressed!! The monastery is poorly placed, is older and could do with some maintenance, but to 50/100 meters are building a new: awesome size and modernity.

Go there in the mornings and join the chanting with lamas. It is a very pleasing site and go with a few hours to spare. Carry a good camera with you as there are plenty of photo opportunities.  more »

Where to stay in Ulaanbaatar

The capital city of Ulaanbaatar doesn't disappoint when it comes to its choice of accommodations, with a range of styles and types to choose from. The usual place to look lies to the northeast of the main train station, in the central district that surrounds Chinggis Khaan Square. Luxury and non-luxury chain hotels, some storied older hotels, and a variety of fairly standard options abound across this central district, close to the main urban attractions. Dotted throughout are a number of guesthouses, providing value for money mid-range and budget options, including some offering shared "gers" (traditional Mongolian sleeping tents).
