Gandantegchenling Monastery, Ulaanbaatar

(440+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Visit a revitalized and restored Tibetan-style Buddhist compound at Gandantegchenling Monastery. Home to more than 150 monks, the suburban monastery features a residential area for religious practitioners, ornate temples, teaching centers, and a 26.5 m (87 ft) copper statue of Avalokitesvara adorned with 2,286 gems and precious stones. Although the temple escaped Stalin's mass destruction of religious institutions, worship restrictions remained in place until 1990, the end of Marxism in Mongolia. • Thus would be a fantastic place but it is starting to look like a run down place falling apart. Needs a lot of repairs.  more »
  • Definitely not one of the most memorable temples I have seen, and it looked like it was not well maintained. Listening to the monks chanting was the only memorable part of this visit.  more »
