Inspirock Rating:
3.7/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web
Visit a revitalized and restored Tibetan-style Buddhist compound at Gandantegchenling Monastery. Home to more than 150 monks, the suburban monastery features a residential area for religious practitioners, ornate temples, teaching centers, and a 26.5 m (87 ft) copper statue of Avalokitesvara adorned with 2,286 gems and precious stones. Although the temple escaped Stalin's mass destruction of religious institutions, worship restrictions remained in place until 1990, the end of Marxism in Mongolia.
