Bogd Khaan Palace Museum of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar

4.1
#3 of 21 in Museums in Mongolia
Escape the traffic and admire the luxuriant decadence of a declining kingdom at Bogd Khaan Palace Museum of Mongolia, the winter palace of Mongolia's last khan. One of the few remaining historical structures left untouched by Soviets or Communists, the Buddhist complex features six temples with elaborately painted warriors on massive entrance doors, colorful sculptures, extravagant interior decor, and Chinese-style hip bamboo roofs. Highlights include a yurt covered in hides of 150 snow leopards, a British horse cart, modern surrealist Buddhist-style murals with erotic scenes, a collection of taxidermied animals from Bogd Khan's private zoo, and exquisitely adorned regalia worn by the khan's pet elephants. • Not many sightseeing points within the city of ulanbaatar. Need to take car for a few hours to the suburb. Need at least a week or more here in Mongolia. Wild country  more »
  • But until now didn't know much about Mongolia's Guide in Japan, explained politely. Worth seeing. And more showed partial treatment and do not immediately destroyed, disturbing.

  • The former winter palace of the last king, now turned into a museum. The exterior is not very impressive. The treasures are inside the palace, the gem stones adorned thrones, the furniture and the clo...  more »

  • Another good place to visit in Ulaambataar. There are some lovely pieces of authentic buddhist art and iconography that survived the cultural purge. This can be a little tricky to find in situ in Mongolia so definitely worth a visit. It's a little pricey and if you want to take photos or videos you have to pay a great deal more. The museum has explanations in English and provides some great insight into the reign of the last Khaans.
  • Very beautiful collection of historicals, nice temple, very nice Areal showing the difference between Tradition and modern asia. I didnt like the collection of stuffed animals though but i guess for somebody who is into it, it must be quite impressive.
  • Historical museum. Worth visiting
  • Interesting piece of Mongolia's history. The last Bogd Khan was in power shortly before the change to socialism so it is still relatively recent history as well.
  • This museum has been used by Bogd Khan. but the bad thing is to serve only an interpreter for foreign tourists
