Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Monaco-Ville

(4.3/5 based on 750+ reviews on the web)
A Roman Catholic cathedral and burial place of the country's royalty, Saint Nicholas Cathedral exudes a sense of hushed solemnity amidst shining marble floors and delicate frescoes. Constructed on the site of Monaco's first parish church, which was built in 1252, the cathedral was consecrated in 1875. An ornate and light-filled building, this cathedral was the site of both the wedding and the burial of the celebrated Grace Kelly, who married Prince Rainier III here in 1956. Take some time to walk around the cathedral and visit the chapels of the relics of St. Devote and St. Roman and the chapel of the Holy Sacrament. • The white limestone from La Turbie gives an appearance of a razor. Inside, very nice neo-byzantine mosaic decorating the dome and underneath niches of mosaic with images of saints. Do not miss the great altarpiece of St Nicolas, work of Louis Bréa. See also the altarpiece of St. Dévote, patron of the Principality. In the ambulatory are the tombs of the princes, and Princess Grace.

  • Beautiful neo classic architecture, is situated at the top of the Hill in Monaco, with wonderful view to the sea. With a lot of story to tell, it was in that Cathedral celebrated the wedding of Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly. There are also their tombs. The Oceanographic Museum and the Palace are nearby.

  • Cathedral quite recent (work began in 1875 and was completed in 1903, but the consecration of the Church took place in 1911)), built in Romanesque style, with extensive use of Carrara marble. Very nice great and superb organ with 60 registers (today, after the last restoration were apparently brought to 72!) I would have liked so much hear him play to its full extent, but I imagine that this is reserved for solemn ceremonies. The Interior is austere, three naves, with numerous works of art, including an altarpiece depicting St. Nicholas, and a triptych of Saint devote. Here are buried several eminent personalities: principles, Marquis, "gentlemen". Among them, lie the mortal remains of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace Kelly.
