Prince's Palace (Palais du Prince), Monaco-Ville

4.2
#1 of 15 in Things to do in Monaco-Ville
Take an audio tour of Prince's Palace (Palais du Prince), occupied for more than 700 years by the ruling Grimaldi family. Built on the site of an 1191 Genoese fortress, the palace is still well fortified--it was frequently besieged over the centuries by Monaco’s larger and more powerful neighbors. Imposing from the outside, the royal family's only residence also displays wealth and opulence in its interior, furnished in the style of Louis XIV. Explore the state apartments, where you can see intricately painted 16th-century frescoes of mythological figures, and see the throne, draped with a red velvet awning and topped by the crown. The palace is only open to the public for a few months a year, so check the website for details. • We did not plan our visit in advance and purchased the aquarium/palace ticket package....very glad we did! Very interesting to the whole family to see the active and historic residence, including room...  more »
  • A lot of people to see the changing of the guard, and in full sun in summer, it's hard enough as it is necessary to approach early to see something. But a policeman circled on the Palace square before the statement to ask children to pass strings, and sit, and adults standing compellingly and behind the strings. Good show! We have not visited the Palace itself, because a lot of people and not necessarily interesting.

  • The Palace is beautiful but the audio guides that they give you are out of date, really. You have to hold them by your ear and you have no choice of speeding it up. Also, be careful not to wear anything too revealing or you might not be allowed to enter. Filming is prohibited inside.
  • Great view to the city and the port. Nice local shops and restaurants around the palace. You can get there either walking up from the train station or better just take a bus from the city's transportation system.
  • Monaco is all about great views, luxury and great weather and this is the perfect example of it. If you are a lady make sure you bring your nicest most comfortable shoes for the all the walking you'll be doing.
  • Really nice place with a good view of the whole city. Great square to take photos in.
  • If you visit Monaco this is definitely a must place to visit. Recommended.
