Prince's Palace, Monaco-Ville

4.2
#1 of 19 in Things to do in Monaco-Ville
Take an audio tour of Prince's Palace, occupied for more than 700 years by the ruling Grimaldi family. Built on the site of an 1191 Genoese fortress, the palace is still well fortified--it was frequently besieged over the centuries by Monaco’s larger and more powerful neighbors. Imposing from the outside, the royal family's only residence also displays wealth and opulence in its interior, furnished in the style of Louis XIV. Explore the state apartments, where you can see intricately painted 16th-century frescoes of mythological figures, and see the throne, draped with a red velvet awning and topped by the crown. The palace is only open to the public for a few months a year, so check the website for details. • Salt and stories, corridors and paintings, sofas and carpets ... like a ghost haunts Grace and grace ... pity that none of his grandchildren to know them about continuing the tale; Maybe it's easier life as heiress by Princess with a Kingdom to save?

  • A nice building but can be seen only from the outside, you can't enter to visit no wing. Worth it for the views and the site in which it resides. The streets are features and also the shops where you can buy some souvenirs. On the double comfortably by bus is frequent and uncrowded, the ticket to Board

  • The changing of the guard occurred at 5 to noon. It only lasts 5 minutes. The palace itself was not open this month.  more »

  • Amazing Palace and history specially since it belongs to one family almost 1000 years ago. take the bus since the walk uphill is long. Breath taking view of the Monaco famous Marina. the palace is guarded by security walking outside its main doors. walked along the small little shop houses lovely good shops and restaurants with good prices.much recommended to visit if in Monaco.
  • The Palace itself maybe isn't quite as grand (at least on the outside, we didn't get see the inside) as many others around Europe, but it's still well worth a visit. Primarily because it's situated right near a small old-town area full of eateries and souvenir shops (as well as actual residences and other building on interest, like an old.court house) and the views from the palace hill over the bays of Monaco are pretty spectacular.
  • Very underwhelming. Honestly, if it weren't so close to the gorgeous aquarium (that has awesome views at the top), I wouldn't even bother coming here. It looks like a fake castle at a Disneyland. Every 15 minutes or so you'll hear frantic parents telling their kids to come back because they've crossed the perimeter where the guards are watching. That's entertaining for like a minute.
  • Close to the old town in Monaco this is a refreshing place in the midst of the noise and crowdy places "downtown" - very nice! Walk around the cape and go down through the Fort Antoine in Port Monaco, and to the newly built "stairs" outside the port. Great place to chill...
  • An interesting place. Not a palace in the grand sense but worth a look. There are only so many rooms you can see and they are worth your time. Make sure you are outside for the changing of the guard. If I remember correctly it is around 12:30 daily. Location wise it has it all, views of the mountains overlooking Monaco and the harbour.

Where to stay in Monaco-Ville

The quiet, pedestrianized streets of Monaco-Ville house many historic buildings, bars, and restaurants, but little by way of accommodations. You can possibly find some apartment rentals in this old center of town, but little else. Most visitors stay up in Monte Carlo, or down in Fontvieille.
