The Metropolitan Cathedral “Nativity of the Lord”, Chisinau

4.4
Bombed during World War II, The Metropolitan Cathedral “Nativity of the Lord”--the principal cathedral of the Moldovan Orthodox Church--offers insight into the country's spiritual life. Built in the 1830s, the building is of Neoclassical design, featuring rows of columns, bold lines, a large dome, and a stark white exterior. In contrast, the intricately and colorfully decorated interior boasts grand murals of religious imagery painted in blue, green, and gold across the ceilings and walls, and an array of finely worked gold. The cathedral has a separate bell tower, which was rebuilt in 1997 after its destruction in 1962 by communists. Visitors to the church are expected to dress modestly. • Great and beautiful Orthodox cathedral that occupies the central place in the park that surrounds it. You will enjoy the cathedral and the beauty of the park.  more »
  • Doesn't look really typical, for the stone used for the Colonnade, the separate Bell Tower, but do you appreciate for its austerity, set in the middle of a small park very well looked after that exalts the figure.

  • It was a cathedral until the Soviet occupation. It becames a museum. Again a church from 1992
  • The Cathedral of Christ's Nativity is the main cathedral of the Moldovan Orthodox Church in Chișinău, Moldova. It was commissioned by the governor of New Russia, Prince Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov, and Metropolitan Gavril Bănulescu-Bodoni in 1830. The cathedral was built in the 1830s to a Neoclassical design by Abram Melnikov. The cathedral was bombed during World War II, and its bell tower was destroyed by the Communists in 1962. The new bell tower was constructed in 1997. During the Soviet period, worship was prohibited and the cathedral was transformed into an exhibition center. The inside was completely blank during the Soviet period but nowadays it sports beautiful painted walls in pure orthodox style.
  • The cathedral is one of the biggest in town. Real gem and important part of the city center
  • The park is so refreshing during hot summer in Moldova, you can try to play chess there - on the big chess table in front of cathedral.
