Stefan cel Mare Park, Chisinau

#Nature / Park, #Must See
The oldest public park in Moldova, Stefan cel Mare Park sits on the city's main street and was laid out in the time of Alexander I. Nicknamed "the park of the lovers," explore the leafy avenues and sheltered corners that make this space popular with couples and groups alike. The park contains an abundance of statues and monuments, including an 1885 monument to Pushkin, the oldest surviving monument in the city. Stroll down the Alley of Classics, an avenue of sculptures dedicated to Romanian literary heroes and political leaders of Moldova. Grab a cup of coffee and some picnic foods from local vendors, watch kids on the popular playground, meet local people, and learn about the city's history. • The City Park offers opportunity to relax outdoors, walks on a lake. Along the park there are several benches that allow rest stops for the more lazy, since to descend to the Lake there is a beautiful staircase.

  • Was in Chisinau 2 weeks and passed almost all the parks! This park I remember busts of writers. Went with my girlfriend surprised each representative literature! Sorry of course that were in the winter, in the summer probably indescribably beautiful!

  • Lovely walk through Stefan cel Mare Park, named after a king from 500 years ago that won against the Turkish (if I've remembered right). Seriously impressed that they have charging points, all working...  more »

  • Always looking spectacular, in a very beautiful and clean place! Nearby are a few lovely parks.
  • A nice central location at the point of the primary historical strip. At the entrance to a beautiful park, Stefan is honored as a sort of founding father of Moldova, this is a revered man and a respected monument.
  • A nice place to contemplate in the city center. During the summer you can rest on the stone benches, but during winter you would find the too cold.
  • Nice park in a central location near many interesting sites to see.
  • The monument to Stephen the Great was designed by the architect Alexandru Plămădeală in 1923. It was erected near the main entrance of the Stephen the Great Park in Central Chişinău. The monument was completed in 1927 and opened on 29 April 1928 (to replace the monument to Alexander II of Russia, destroyed by the Romanian authorities in 1918), marking the 470th birthday of Stephen the Great. In 1940, the Romanians relocated the monument to Vaslui and blew up its pedestal. On August 25, 1942, the monument was returned to Chişinău and taken back to Romania in 1944. In 1945, the Soviet authorities ordered the restoration of the monument. On 31 August 1989, the monument to Stephen the Great was returned to its original location, chosen by Alexandru Plămădeală in the 1920s. The initial inscriptions were restored.
