Lago Bacalar (Lake of the Seven Colors), Yucatan Peninsula

4.8
Take a refreshing dip in the pristine waters of Lago Bacalar (Lake of the Seven Colors). The long and narrow lake, which is approximately 42 km (26 mi) long and just under 2 km (1.2 mi) wide, is renowned for its water that changes color throughout the day. It has a white limestone floor and feeds from water that originates from underground rivers and cenotes. Head to the western shore of the lake to find the village of Bacalar, which was a city of the Maya civilization during Pre-Columbian times. Photos online were not incredible, but my Mexican friends had it me the most recommended and the same people who we find along the way, all spoke me wonders, said that it was a site to see safe. The first impression was not tremendous, but the truth is that we arrived and there was perhaps too much sun and everything changes with a few highlighted. Certainly one of the sites most beautiful visited, not by the town itself, which is quite small and the truth is even ugly at times, very dilapidated, except the main square and without many thing to do. Everything changes when he gets to the jetties to take a bath or only to take pictures and enjoy the beautiful colors of this lagoon. Explained us the issue of colors, not is if I got to find them but the truth is impressive. The problem with this place is that almost all entrances to the lagoon are private, is a real pity the truth that the Mexican Government has allowed this, but we already know how Mr don is money. There are only 3 free tickets to the public, we made a pair and the truth is that it is worth paying, I recommend above all 2 places, the Aluxes, which is a restaurant, which I'll talk about below in this entry and the cocalitos, which is a slightly cheaper but also precious spot. The rest of sites is more normal, within the beautiful. I think that a couple of nights here is more than enough, especially after making a tour and give a few turns there isn't much thing to do. Restaurants were not bad, but without more, we ate fairly better in Holbox, Playa del Carmen or Tulum.
