Cenote Azul, Yucatan Peninsula

4.6
#11 of 80 in Nature in Yucatan Peninsula
Geologic Formation Water Body
Swim and relax at Cenote Azul, a natural, below-ground lagoon with two smaller, shallower pools close by. Cool off in the refreshing, clear water, snorkeling and observing the tropical fish that call this remote oasis home. A small cliff provides a popular place to jump off from and dive into the evocatively colored pool. The two other pools provide shallower waters for less confident swimmers. Primarily frequented by locals, the cenote has not been overdeveloped, but you'll find certain basic amenities onsite, such as bathrooms and snack stands. • Although this isn't the only Cenote in the area, it was the closest to us that we could walk to. If you've never visited one of these, I high recommend you doing so and this is a fine one to got see and enjoy. Water is a tad cold, but that's to be expected as the water is really deep. We cliff jumped this one and snorkeled. The little fish will nibble at your feet.
  • Really nice place to swim and relax, yet fun for the young ones as well. You can dive and jump in the water from different places or you can stay still and let the small fish give you a clean up on your skin.
  • Very nice place, if you come at 9am, get very crowded after 12pm. It is shallow you can swim or walk across, you can jump of the cliff where water deep. No fins or sunscreen allowed. When crowded water gets murky. This cenote is Ok for non swimmers.
  • Nice place to spend a few hours at. Lots of fun! Several different pools to lounge in and get a fish pedi.
  • A great spot to spend a few hours. Bring your snorkel, towel and a lunch, this place is a great hangout to cool off. On weekends you'll find local families hanging out, but it can be much quieter during the weekdays. Take a jump off the small rock edge, swim through a small tunnel or even get a free pedicure from the little fish that nibble on your feet. Easy access right off the highway, spot in for a dip
