San Juan de Ulua, Veracruz

(4.5/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
Admire an impressive military structure that stood for centuries at San Juan de Ulua. Construction began on the fort in 1565, although it was expanded numerous occasions thereafter. In 1568, the Spanish in the area succeeded in trapping and humiliating an English fleet, commanded by Sir John Hawkins, and including his cousin, a young Francis Drake. The fort even held strong during the Mexican War of Independence, with the Spanish finally handing it over four years after Mexico achieved independence. Take a tour of the structure to learn its history, and the features that made it so durable for so long. • Hi, visit this emblematic place, typical of Veracruz, is a real adventure, from that you transport to the place, whether in private car or tourist trucks they are very inexpensive, the place has an era architectural structure, it is clean and easily accessible, the only downside is that it does not have signs that describe the areas and what happened there.

  • It is a place that they should not lose in Veracruz, this close to the area of shipping containers, and I went Sunday and doesn't cost you the entrance, take a tour with a guide that explained very well but I remember that there was both the residence of benito Juárez and also the prison, there was the famous roto Chuco , history of the mulata de Córdoba, also kept the gunpowder to defend port etc, very overwhelming to know that in some quarters there lived up to 100 prisoners in deplorable conditions before was in the midst of the sea now is attached to the dock, there were sharks etc, are wide walls made of coral and mortar, now they have stalactites went on family

  • I have had the opportunity to visit several times this Fort and everytime I go I am surprised something new, it is highly recommended to contract a certified guide, tell all stages who lived the enclosure during its long history. I recommend go very hydrated, and if you want to bring some take only be water, because they can't pass any beverage containing dyes.

  • Muy buen lugar turístico para visitar en Veracruz
  • Nice view and contrasting sights between the misterious and creepy jails and the majestous and modern cranes.
