#1 of 12 in Sightseeing in Veracruz
Castle Historic Site
Admire an impressive military structure that stood for centuries at San Juan de Ulua. Construction began on the fort in 1565, although it was expanded numerous occasions thereafter. In 1568, the Spanish in the area succeeded in trapping and humiliating an English fleet, commanded by Sir John Hawkins, and including his cousin, a young Francis Drake. The fort even held strong during the Mexican War of Independence, with the Spanish finally handing it over four years after Mexico achieved independence. Take a tour of the structure to learn its history, and the features that made it so durable for so long. • Very well kept, the former fort/prison/armory is great to behold. It's a short walk, from the parking lot to the actual buildings, and it might be worth it to get a tour guide, but it's not essential. Great for photo taking excursions, and interesting to see how the port has taken over what once was far from downtown. A must see
  • Increíble! A must in veracruz. 1st place where Spanish set foot in was this island and was also the last place where they hold resistance.
  • Great historical place. A must visit in veracruz
  • Interesting place full of local history but suffers from being away from the centre of Veracruz.
  • Nice place lots of history and crazy stories
