Ek Balam, Valladolid

4.7
When exploring the Mayan city of Ek Balam, don't forget to visit Ek Balam, a natural limestone sinkhole used by the Maya people for ceremonies. Hike or take a rickshaw ride on the tree-lined path to the cenote, the deep freshwater basin that the Mayas considered sacred. You can go for a relaxing walk along the boardwalk encircling the cenote, or rappel on the rope swings into the water. Cool off with a dip in the basin's clear water and look for the many catfish that inhabit the cenote. Make Ek Balam a part of your Valladolid vacation plans using our Valladolid trip maker website .

  • Visited Apr 2017! We went right when it opened to beat the crowd and heat! So glad that we did, when we were walking out the crowd was coming in. We had the park to ourselves for a while. I don't know why this place isn't more popular! The acropolis at Ek Balam is fantastic! You have to go to the top of it and take in the beauty and magnitude of the place! Bathrooms at the entrance were clean and they had toilet seats!! Score! We went to the cenote next door to cool off. Another must do!
  • Loved the Ruins. What's special about these ruins is how well preserved some of the statues and carvings are. Also loved the village. We purchased candy and soccer balls to distribute to all the local kids of Ek-Balam pueblo.
  • Great site !! Very interesting to visit and where you can climb on monuments. Also very few people even during the day. Really we enjoyed the visit. And we did the cenote too :)
  • This was a cool place! You can actually climb to the top of this temple and look out for miles. Lots of symbolism at this temple. We used Eric Martinez from Mayan Destination Services and learned a lot about the ancient Mayan culture.
  • Had a lovely day here. Nice walk to the ruins, great views from the top of the ruins and refreshing swim in the cenote after.

Where to stay in Valladolid

Valladolid offers an impressive range of budget-friendly accommodations, with very reasonable prices for comfortable hotels that would be much more expensive in other Mexican destinations. Parque Francisco Canton, at the very heart of the city's central grid, contains small, affordable hotels within walking distance of the best Valladolid attractions. You can also look on the western fringes of town, where you'll find several places to stay near the meeting point of routes 180 and 79.
