Convent de San Bernardino de Siena, Valladolid

4.3
Convent de San Bernardino de Siena stands as Xochimilco's cultural and historic center. An old parish church built in the 16th century over a pre-Hispanic temple, the convent features a simple beige stone wall façade, long corridors of thick arches, and a grass courtyard. Inside stands a towering altar lavished in gold decoration and religious icons. Observe numerous old paintings and frescos hanging throughout. Head up to the organ loft or bell tower for encompassing views of the plaza. A nighttime light show tells town's history accompanied by a light projection on the church's façade. • We went to Valladolid after many years and we think we find that magical place and so it was, the people are beautiful and picturesque coffee rich and quite colorful guys there are many but this convent leaves much to be desired. Good, the facade, serves as background for the photos, the Museum is good and worthy to see historical articles. The cafes and shops that are on the periphery very cute. The bad thing. Everything else. Badly cared, you need much maintenance, a backyard in terrible conditions, there is a Ferris wheel without form and without information, dirty, and nobody gives you reports! Obviously never return! Very bad experience. Already been warned not to lose your time!

  • The architecture of the building is striking but I feel you have rather neglected. Admission is $30 per person. There is little or no signage, runs in 20 minutes. There are no murals figures. The altarpieces in the Church are very nice.

  • Such a peaceful space and their little museum filled with pottery and guns that were found in the local well is really interesting.  more »

  • I enjoyed my visit to the ex-convent. The exterior has been restored. Many of interior spaces have not been decorated and are sparsely furnished, yet they are striking. Overall, site has a humble beauty, true to the region. There's a light and video projection on the exterior each evening at 9pm (cancelled if it rains). It runs first in Spanish, followed by English (approx 15 min each).
  • The ancient pink four-sided portico is magical. There is also a garden with a few animals, and the church where you can see a local function. Entrance free on Sundays.
  • Free light show in Spanish then English every night. A peaceful place.
  • Saw the awesome free light show on a Wednesday evening. Wait fifteen minutes in and it replays in English.
  • Historic church with a beautiful and echoey interior. We were not charged admission and enjoyed the few minutes we spent looking around and all the pictures of Jesus nailed to the cross. Unfortunately we were not able to see the night light show.

Where to stay in Valladolid

Valladolid offers an impressive range of budget-friendly accommodations, with very reasonable prices for comfortable hotels that would be much more expensive in other Mexican destinations. Parque Francisco Canton, at the very heart of the city's central grid, contains small, affordable hotels within walking distance of the best Valladolid attractions. You can also look on the western fringes of town, where you'll find several places to stay near the meeting point of routes 180 and 79.
