Historic Site
Convent de San Bernardino de Siena stands as Xochimilco's cultural and historic center. An old parish church built in the 16th century over a pre-Hispanic temple, the convent features a simple beige stone wall façade, long corridors of thick arches, and a grass courtyard. Inside stands a towering altar lavished in gold decoration and religious icons. Observe numerous old paintings and frescos hanging throughout. Head up to the organ loft or bell tower for encompassing views of the plaza. A nighttime light show tells town's history accompanied by a light projection on the church's façade. • I enjoyed my visit to the ex-convent. The exterior has been restored. Many of interior spaces have not been decorated and are sparsely furnished, yet they are striking. Overall, site has a humble beauty, true to the region. There's a light and video projection on the exterior each evening at 9pm (cancelled if it rains). It runs first in Spanish, followed by English (approx 15 min each).
  • The ancient pink four-sided portico is magical. There is also a garden with a few animals, and the church where you can see a local function. Entrance free on Sundays.
  • Saw the awesome free light show on a Wednesday evening. Wait fifteen minutes in and it replays in English.
  • Free light show in Spanish then English every night. A peaceful place.
  • Historic church with a beautiful and echoey interior. We were not charged admission and enjoyed the few minutes we spent looking around and all the pictures of Jesus nailed to the cross. Unfortunately we were not able to see the night light show.
