Convent de San Bernardino de Siena, Valladolid
Categories: Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Convent de San Bernardino de Siena stands as Xochimilco's cultural and historic center. An old parish church built in the 16th century over a pre-Hispanic temple, the convent features a simple beige stone wall façade, long corridors of thick arches, and a grass courtyard. Inside stands a towering altar lavished in gold decoration and religious icons. Observe numerous old paintings and frescos hanging throughout. Head up to the organ loft or bell tower for encompassing views of the plaza. A nighttime light show tells town's history accompanied by a light projection on the church's façade. This church/fort was completed/built in 1560. Only 68 years after the discovery of the Americas. Absolutely amazing place to see. There is a cenote too. Obviously used for fresh water and the purpose of building this relic there.
