Wildlife Area
Nicknamed "the home of the spider monkey and the puma," Punta Laguna Nature Reserve tempts the explorer in you with its shimmering blue lagoon enclosed by a sprawling dense jungle. Declared a national protected area in 2002, the reserve represents an excellent example of sustainable tourism created and run by local communities. The 5,367 hectare (13,262 acre) grounds are home to 120 Maya villagers, many of whom maintain the reserve and offer hiking tours for those wishing to learn more about the surrounding plant and animal life. You can arrange canoeing, ziplining and water hole rappelling with your guide. Softly tread the trails of this humid jungle and you may be rewarded with a glimpse of one of the hundreds of spider or howler monkeys that live here. • Great place for the more rustic traveler. Not many tourists here, but totally worth the trip, especially if you are already at Coba. Nice lake for canoeing, zip-line, nature walks (to see the monkeys)...  more »
  • EH had the opportunity to go several times to take pictures of the fauna of the area and to tell the truth it is a stunning place, you can see monkeys, Howler, spider, insect, sometimes snakes and locals are those that you guide and know a lot about their environment. Congratulations to all those who work there.

  • Nature reserve managed by a small group of Maya. There are monkeys Screamers and spider monkeys. We can go canoeing on the Lake. A cenote is also available after a small Mayan purification (folk). We did that the visit of the monkeys. It is useful to take a guide because he knows where to go in the jungle to see the animals. The ride lasts 1 hour. There is only happiness. On the advice of the guide, we see the spider monkeys, in total freedom. And there is only happiness! Prepare your telephoto lenses and snap away. The visit ends with the passage at the booth of handmade items. Usually, I'm not at all sensitive to this type of commerce. Here I give because obviously it's them who made the objects. It's a trip to do it alone without Agency. Very easy to access. Recommended repellent lotion. Entry 100 pesos per person Guide 300 pesos Total 2 persons: 500 pesos. After the visit, we stay as long as you want. Really good memories.
