Canada de la Virgen, San Miguel de Allende

4.5
#2 of 13 in Parks in Guanajuato
See the indigenous archaeological site of Canada de la Virgen, an ancient temple complex belonging to the native Otomi people. Discovered in 1998 on private property, the site has only recently opened to the public. Take a guided tour of the complex to learn about the history of the ethnic group that inhabited these parts for thousands of years, and to acquaint yourself with their culture and traditions. View the ruins of the pyramids, thought to be ceremonial burial grounds, and climb the sloped structures for good views of the surroundings. Put Canada de la Virgen and other San Miguel de Allende attractions into our San Miguel de Allende trip itinerary planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

We booked a tour of this site on a recommendation. It was well worth it. The site itself is deep off a main road and there is a hike to actually get to the site once you take a van ride to the drop-of...  more »

I can connect just the description of OLAF G except for the walk which now is 1,4Km (here the bus can use probably better) and so wanders it is 2,5Std on the road of next ES for about €2 really. Entertainment offered (in Spanish) but with much effort and passion. Shows the whole system with all plantations and historic backgrounds is definitely worth a visit, PS. case backpacks and bags are forbidden > water recommended :)

Who doesn't like pyramids? This one is 16 meters high, very cool. They are still working on it, but it is a nice drive from San Miguel de Allende. It takes about 2.5 hours to go through. But be sure an call ahead, groups sometimes reserve whole blocks. They also have a nice garden with local flora.

This is a very interesting place as we were told by our guide that the burial here is of a little girl dressed as a warrior. This is the only burial found so far and very unusual for a Mayan Pyramid. The place is lovely and very serene.

Had an incredible tour here thanks to Coyote Canyon Adventures who organized that. It was amazing to see the link between archeology and astrology and how much we can learn from that pyramid!
