Canada de la Virgen, San Miguel de Allende

4.6
#2 of 17 in Parks in Guanajuato
See the indigenous archaeological site of Canada de la Virgen, an ancient temple complex belonging to the native Otomi people. Discovered in 1998 on private property, the site has only recently opened to the public. Take a guided tour of the complex to learn about the history of the ethnic group that inhabited these parts for thousands of years, and to acquaint yourself with their culture and traditions. View the ruins of the pyramids, thought to be ceremonial burial grounds, and climb the sloped structures for good views of the surroundings. • An hour car ride got us to this site. Unbelievable! Historically and architecturally fascinating. Were were able to walk around the grounds and climb the pyramid. On our walks, we could find broken po...  more »

  • Impressed by the quality of the facilities. We arrived by car with the idea of doing the tour on our own but we find that you have to take a tour of 2.5 hours mandatory way within the established timetable. We get discouraged a little bit because we did not see that information on the internet but we decided to stay. Entry costs around Central magnificent $30 per person and they allow you to make use of the parking and bathrooms with no additional cost. They take you on a sprinter with air conditioning to the archaeological site since you have to cross private property to get there. The explanation of the zone is good but they give a script, lack a little deeper into the content. The area is very nice and the temple is very impressive. There are no explanations in English places to eat nearby. Bring water and a hat.

  • I thought it was amazing that this was only found about 20 years ago and is still not completely uncovered. To think that we know so little about these people is amazing. Be ready for a bit of a walk, since not every thing is found yet it is quite a hike to get to the site, but I thought it was well worth it.
  • We were picked up at Bellas Artes in San Miguel as scheduled, drove directly to the welcome centre, took bout 30 minutes. Where we met Albertb Coffee, who was our guide, he was part of the archeological team who recovered this ruin. He was very knowledgeable and a great story teller. It's been a great experience to us and understanding the rich culture of Mexico. No one should miss visiting this site.
  • Took a tour with Albert Coffee. Absolutely amazing! Perfect tour 10/10
  • Really nice location. Not too busy with tourists but BE WARNED. The tour is mandatory and is in Spanish. So if you don't speak expect a 1 hour tour!!!
