  • San Cristóbal de las Casas is a town steeped in a fertile valley surrounded by mountains and home to several indigenous groups descended from the Mayans. Two of the largest are the Tzotziles and Tzeltales who live in the villages of the Highlands surrounding San Cristóbal. INDIGENOUS populations of Chiapas who speak their own language (often in addition to the Spanish), follow their own customs, their own religion and economy (mainly agriculture and crafts) and can identify them by their traditional dress, which varies according to the group. Next to San Cristobal are two charismatic and different populations: San Lorenzo Zinacantán and San Juan Chamula. Both towns offer a unique insight into the traditions and customs of the indigenous Mayan communities of the region. SAN JUAN DE CHAMULA lives mainly in the cultivation of vegetables and they don't practice Catholicism, but their own religion, which makes the visit to his Church in an experience hard to forget, there where dozens of saints are combined into cabinets, flowers, candles in the soil and family rituals around a church full of green straw on the floor and stripped of banks. They live their lives in communities that are relatively closed, although it is common for travelling to San Cristobal to sell their handmade crafts and buy in markets articles of daily use to take them to their villages. A particular experience by the contrast between these two populations and contrasts with what one knows and lives.

  • This village is Santo Cristobal, de, you can go on a day trip from the Las Casas. Use the wagon car taxi is about 15 minutes. Rates are one way at 18 pesos to San Juan Chamula direct acces. Because the villagers pulled the soul won't take pictures. Church building just took a picture. Unlike in the normal Church candles are filled with floor and covered with grass., we hope the villagers sit. Tourists 25 pesos pay puts.
