Playa de los Muertos, Puerto Vallarta

4.0
#1 of 11 in Parks in Puerto Vallarta
Step onto the remote and otherworldly Playa de los Muertos, whose name translates as "Beach of the Dead." Bordered by martian-esque hills, and with a coarse mosaic of sand, the beach's bizarre rock formations contrast sharply against the blue, wavy sea in the background. Secluded and unspoiled, the beach sits at the bottom of a fairly steep and rugged path leading down from the parking lot. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and your own shade if required, as well as your camera to capture images of the desolate-looking paradise. With our world travel planner, Puerto Vallarta attractions like Playa de los Muertos can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • One of my favorite spots, must-see and a rather nice site. Site where you can relax with quiet make sure you and your family.

  • Peopled with pretty well on the local inhabitants of a few tourist/holidaymaker's mahtuessa. A few of the tables, which were eating a late lunch or enjoying a waterfront restaurant and the tables were the services provided by it. A pleasant time.

  • Quite a clean beach for swimming compared to others in the area. Calm waters in some areas and sizable waves in others to accommodate those who want to body surf. However, it is slightly claustrophobi...  more »

  • This beach seems very safe during the day, many families come here. It's outside of town, which is nice, a bit away from all the tourists and noise. I stayed here for a couple nights in my tent for a small sum of money. The guy who runs the place at first seemed to be nice and welcoming. Then after some heavy drinking one night, he became very irate and aggressive. I thought he was going to stab me with a knife for no obvious reason. I do not recommend staying here. This experience was very scary.

Where to stay in Puerto Vallarta

The appropriately named Hotel Zone, at the coastal fringe of the city center, serves as one of the most popular areas to stay, with equally good access to the beach and the amenities within the city. Private rentals are particularly popular, with the Hotel Zone and the equally vibrant hub of Emiliano Zapata to the south offering plenty of condominiums to complement the range of budget, mid-range, and luxury hotels. Many of the city's best gay-friendly accommodations are found at the southern fringe of the old town.
