Playa Zicatela, Puerto Escondido

4.6
Head to the surfer's paradise of Playa Zicatela, a long sandy beach offering the famous waves of the Mexican Pipeline. Stick to the northern end of the beach for the best surfing spots, and the majority of the beach's hip cafes, restaurants, and accommodations. Beginners and those looking for a little more quiet will want to head to the south of the 3 km (1.9 mi) beach, where the surf still presents a challenge, but is more suitable for newcomers to the sport. Don't head out into the waters without a board, as the undertow isn't safe for swimmers. Put Playa Zicatela into our Puerto Escondido trip itinerary maker site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • A LOT of sand! Big waves, but, at this time of year apparently not big enough for good surfing. Not a swimming beach, and not a beach for lounging in a chair under an umbrella. You can go to one of th...  more »

  • I would recommend getting to Playa Zicatela around 3:00 for a bit of shopping then get an sunbrella from a restaurant/bar on the beach to watch the surfers around 5:00; it is very entertaining! The dr...  more »

  • Beautiful Mexican beach. Reasonably quiet while I was here, some families out for the day kids, and all the surfers arrived to surf the break up near the point from 4pm onwards. Not much natural shade, but you can get a sunbed under an umbrella if you invest in a drink or snack from a few local beach restaurants.
  • A wide, uncrowded beach with big waves and hippie-ish vibe. Great for surfers and folks who don't need much for comfort, probably not great for anybody else. Dogs are a huge problem at night, and roosters add to the noise, so better have earplugs handy if you like to get good sleep. Check out nearby Laguna Manialtepec for amazing natural experience and Playa Bacocho for baby turtle release.
  • Nice, long beach with many different restaurants and beach clubs. The sea can get quite rough and dangerous for swimming but great for surfing.
  • One of the most famous beaches for surfing around the world that is Zicatela. It is the largest of Puerto Escondido. It is very long and wide, you can walk a lot and of course, swimming in the sea, though it is of strong waves. Opposite the beach there are many bars, restaurants and cafes to enjoy day and night. You'll find with people everywhere.

  • An area with beach where surfing is practiced. Large waves can be seen almost is not recommended for swimming. The view is spectacular. As almost all the places with beach has restaurants. Its water has a good rating. Is minutes away from Puerto Escondido
