Laguna de Manialtepec, Puerto Escondido

4.5
#2 of 11 in Parks in Puerto Escondido
Explore Laguna de Manialtepec, a scenic coastal lagoon surrounded by lush mangrove trees. The name of the lagoon means "Lizard Place" in the indigenous Nahuatl language. Rent a sailboat, enjoy the picturesque landscape, or take a swim in the lake's mix of fresh and saltwater. Birders should keep their eyes out for numerous permanent and migratory avian species. If you visit at night, you might see the lagoon's famous phosphorescent lights, set aglow by movement. • The tour left us $250 p/p, depart approximately at 8:00 pm to travel. Because everything looked great, starting with that, a tour boat at this time, can see a spectacular sky full of stars, if you're lucky (like me) you will see a shooting star. Approx 30 min in advanced, and the boatman in one of the banks told us that we got. The bioluminescence effect you will see it when you do moves in the water, and it must be completely obscure to appreciate it better, while we were in season in which not seen both this show, we saw it! It's totally magical.

  • The tour to this place was something that we had not contemplated, the experience of sailing in a Lake at night was something new and exciting, despite not being the best month to contemplate the phenomenon we thought was something beautiful and outside the conventional. The guides feature floating structures that allow to appreciate it better.

  • Excellent tour to the lagoon! It is truly amazing to nothing there and see the bodies as they shine to move water! I highly recommend it!

  • Not what I expected. It's not a floating ball of glow in the dark. You get in the water and your movement creates the light. Very cool.
  • It was cool, but the advertisemenr pictures look way brighter than the reality!
  • This is truly amazing experience
  • The plankton refused to light up just because I'm Jewish
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the bird tour and felt that the guides were excited to share what they knew (in Spanish). After the sun went down we were given the option to swim in the lumenecense (algae in the water that flows when disturbed). Bring bugs pray and some money for drinks on the beach.
