Zona Arqueologica de Palenque, Palenque
Observe and inspect impressive ruins and intricate Mayan carvings, surrounded by dense jungle, at Zona Arqueologica de Palenque. At just 2.5 sq km (1 sq mi), the site is fairly small compared to some of the more revered indigenous ruins. That said, archaeologists estimate only about 10% of the city has been excavated, leaving potentially thousands of structures still covered by jungle. Allow yourself plenty of time to admire the site and its rich documented history. Consider hiring a guide to teach you about the site’s interesting history. Also super recommended for outdoor walking and for travelers who like to explore and get to know the culture of other places. You can buy souvenirs both on and off the site at very good prices.

I recommend getting one of the certified Mayan tour guides before entering the site. We hired Rudy and he showed us around the temple grounds, thoroughly explaining the history of the site and how it has been restored, and even taking pictures of us in front of different structures. He then took us into the jungle for a short walk, where we saw some of the many still-covered buildings. We dipped our feet into a small stream with tiny fish that peck at your feet. He was a really friendly and funny guy, and helped us understand the history of the site far better than if we had just tried to read the plaques. Also, you're not allowed into the jungle area without a guide.
It is an extremely beautiful historical place. However, the guias, local guides are aggressive. Do not assume that people coming from outside Mexico are ignorant and do not your history or never read a book. It is not mandatory to hire you, so behave! Do not follow us and do not pretend to be paid if you show us a direction. Other than that, the place is very beautiful and well looked after. It was hard to get there by our own car, but worth it. Please, use more signs, so we do not get lost.
Compared to other Maya sites, this one gives a good impression of what the city must have been like (thanks to renovation work). The buildings are very impressive. Also, because of all the inscriptions there is a lot to learn about the Maya's. The site does attract a big load of tourists every day.
Amazing place! You can climb most of the structures. There are paths along ruins through the jungle. The ruins are intriguing and there are lots of reliefs to watch. It couldn't be any better.
One of the best, if not the best archeological sites to visit in Mexico. We were amazed by the size of the size. Spent nearly 2 hrs just walking around and I was told there was more to see. The tour guides are quite cheap and I recommend to get one as they seem knowledgeable about their heritage.
