Palenque ruinas, Palenque

4.9
Observe and inspect impressive ruins and intricate Mayan carvings, surrounded by dense jungle, at Palenque ruinas. At just 2.5 sq km (1 sq mi), the site is fairly small compared to some of the more revered indigenous ruins. That said, archaeologists estimate only about 10% of the city has been excavated, leaving potentially thousands of structures still covered by jungle. Allow yourself plenty of time to admire the site and its rich documented history. Consider hiring a guide to teach you about the site’s interesting history. • Is without a doubt the most beautiful archaeological site on Mexico! Everyone runs at Chichen-Itza because easier to reach for tourism, but without detracting from the famous site of the Yucatan Peninsula, Palenque is incomparable! We were hiking in the morning with an exclusive Guide for the two of us and we couldn't find a better person; thank Gilberto! He explained every detail, we did go up and enter everywhere, we gave advice on best eye shots for photos .... and never made us quickly: outstanding! In this way we were able to fully enjoy and appreciate this site that is truly unique for its architecture ... surrounded by hundreds of shades of green, with the distant cry of howler monkeys that propagates between the temples and where, despite the tourists, you perceive that sense of peace and silence typical of a snowfall ... you can not describe but just try! Here comes into play a mystical component, it does not seem to stay at luna park as at Chichen-Itza, there are hordes of tourists that are in competition to see who comes first in the best vantage point ... is all about (even the few sellers who are not yelling don't whistle and do not disturb), evenly distributed, it listens to those old buildings that tell of their time. Probably the low tourist season and went in the morning rather than afternoon favored "not crowding" of the place, so recommend to visit in April-June rather than in December. The tour continued into the wilderness, where Gilberto made us know the appearance and properties of many plants and here I saw up close the hummingbirds; then he took us to see the falls of the Queen and other ruins that correspond to small dwellings of the people and that I was fascinated so much because were subject to an imposing vegetation and wondered how did not collapse under the weight mature trees! I knew departing I visited an exceptional place, but never I would expect a riot of amazement-charm-emotions-history as Palenque has been able to give me!

  • Very well maintained and clean. they are doing some restorations, but most can be visited. It is good to wear and previously documented. they are not ruins. It is an archaeological site.

  • Even if you've seen Chichen Itza, Palenque is very special and full of unique atmosphere. Don't miss it.  more »
