Grutas de Lol-Tun Reviews
This is an amazing cave system well worth seeing. It contains evidence of humans going back more than 10,000 years to pre-Mayan civilizations. The caves are warm and fairly dry although they become mo... more »

The entrance is a payment (rights State and federal) and is recommended to enter with a guide to appreciate the history of the Grotto to 100%. Travel is an hour and half more or less, is to descend approximately 50 metres and walk for almost 2 km by land wet and slippery areas (watch out for stairs and narrow passages!). Please wear clothes suitable for the place, comfortable shoes and a flashlight. The place is not recommended for very young children.

Guide was friendly and explained to good in good English. However pointed us out that he expected about 500 pesos per family (25 euros). Guide is required. Trek good Footwear because the surface is smooth and uneven, not suitable for less mobile people.
Being a geology nerd, I loved this place! Be prepared for a 45min-1 hour walk in very humid conditions (it's cooler than outside at least). We were there during the "dry" season and the floor was still a little slippery in parts, so wear sturdy shoes. There is some lighting but still dark, the guide had a flashlight but you might benefit by bringing your own, too. The stalactites and stalagmites were amazing! Oh, and you'll be charged 3 times here (federal, State, and guide fees), I love Mexico and it's burocracies! :P
I would definitely check these caves out, though beware that there is quite a bit of unstable ground and climbing! My kids loved it (12, 8, 5 yr olds)! We were able to hire an English speaking guide and I would highly recommend it. The Spanish speaking tour that went at the same time had 40 people in it, we only have 8 and I believe got to see more of the cave. The history of the cave is very interesting - it's a must if you are in the area!
OK we did this from Merida and coming from Australia where we have some caves I wasn't impressed. You HAVE to pay for a guide and with a really long, inefficient and expensive journey to get there it's over in 90 minutes. Not recommended unless it's directly on your route. Don't expect lots of Mayan artifacts.
Amazing undergroung cave system. The guide is entertaining and informative. Worth the trip.
Anyone on the ruta Puuc should stop by these caves. The main chamber is really impressive with its 40+ meter high ceiling. The best thing about this place are the ancient cave paintings that are still easily visible. At the same time it's sad to see not much is done to preserve them. After coming home I found out that only decades ago there were many more paintings in the cave but most of them are gone now. Make sure to negotiate a price with your guide up front because their normal scheme of 'tipping' at the end of the tour seems like a way to guilt-trip you out of more money. Our guide was definitely nice but also kind of rushed us through the cave and acted somewhat disappointed when I told him what our 'tip' would be at the end of the tour. Whatever you end up paying, with a beautiful place like this, it's hard to imagine it not being worth the money.
