Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman, Oaxaca

(1,600+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site
Visit Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman, a prime example of New Spanish Baroque architecture dating back to the 16th century. Built during a period of over 200 years, the church has had quite a turbulent history, having suffered from earthquakes throughout the centuries. On the facade, which is flanked by two bell towers, find a statue of Santo Domingo de Guzman, who founded the Dominican order. Inside, there you can appreciate the liberal use of gold all throughout, which creates a warm atmosphere when candles are lit during evening mass. Put Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman and other Oaxaca attractions into our Oaxaca trip itinerary builder, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • It is a beautiful, art-filled Church. Undoubtedly majestic and with many altars to admire. The bad thing is that the priest is very special and if you see with cameras and hats are really bothers. You should not take pictures with flash or admire much if there is a religious ceremony. My recommendation is to do it discreetly. But one of the most beautiful church of all Mexico.

  • This is a beautiful museum. You ca walk though and get a sense of history, walk out to a market and have so many great places to eat in the area. Wonderful, and on a pedestrian walkway too.  more »
  • About five kms from Sta María of Tule is this small village with a temple that is worth visiting. It is a 16th-century Dominican Church decorated with polychrome indigenous, something very different to the usual country and colonial architecture. Entry costs 50 pesos and the temple is open from 9 to 2 and 4 to 6. It is advisable to take the guided tour with one of the guys who is at the door, who will get paid. They explain very well all. You can't miss the organ that is in the choir.

  • Beautiful building. Go to the museum. Hire a local guide (they hang out outside and offer their services). The guide is helpful, gives you a good foundation, and then you can wander on your own after. The church is also gorgeous.
  • This is one of Mexico's best examples of beautiful colonial churches, surrounded by equally beautifully old buildings and streets. A must-see if ever in the area.
  • I've been here a few times, with my family. Very pretty and the art galleries outside are beautiful. I can't wait to go back and show my loved ones where my dad is from. I LOVE OAXACA.
  • 16th century Convent. Alot of history. Enjoy the musuem.
  • One of the nicest churches in the city, there is always activity to see around the plaza. The interior is beautiful and ornately decorated. Worth a visit!
