  • The black mud is a handicraft that has brought world fame to Oaxaca; It is made with a special mud. His pieces burnished, puffs and varied forms are much prized in the market. One of the most important towns in the Valley of Oaxaca in the production of pottery is San Bartolo Coyotepec, town located 8 kilometres from the city of Oaxaca, past the airport. There it has highlighted long personality of Doña Rosa Real de Nieto (deceased) who was recognized for her work as a craft. She gave brightness to black mud when he accidentally discovered that pottery could be polished with quartz stone. In this way came out what today we know as glossy black clay. The black mud is extracted from a spot near the village. Specially prepared to be burned; handled in lathe or mould and left to dry in the Sun for four days. This step gives each piece its delicacy, since it is polished to remove excess glitter and made you draft that will lead. Turns to dry another four days and you're ready to bake with smoke that occurs until it acquires its metallic black colour. Doña Rosa shop you will find art and tradition.

  • I loved to see the tradition of the grandmother being passed to grandsons. He gave us an explanation, presentation and the history of the 'black barro'. Beautiful pieces of art. Cheap prices.
