Zocalo, Oaxaca

4.1
Formally named Plaza de la Constitucion, Zocalo dates back to the 16th century. Take a break from sightseeing and rest on the verdant tree-filled square, observe the lively atmosphere from a cafe, and people watch. Admire the grandiose colonial buildings that surround the square, paying special attention to the Baroque cathedral built of volcanic green stone, and the Gothic state government palace. • I put regular qualification, since unfortunately teachers have it invaded houses of campaigns within the planters, which makes for one and the tourists lose her beauty, however restaurants around are very accessible to sit and people-watching walk, see sellers, etc.

  • The Zocalo is full of energy and is at the center of Oaxacan activity. It's also full of tourists. But, it's a reliable place for transportation (taxis and busses) and is a great place from which to w...  more »
  • Another essential of Oaxaca, know the city becomes for go to the socket and take the pulse of the city and all the farming community that shapes it, coincided us with a concert of a band or an orchestra that encouraged us to visit.

  • Public gathering place of locals and tourists, Many street food and souvenirs. The resturants and bars on the Zocalo are relatively expensive (compared to other places few minutes away) Great place to walk throu or buy a snack
  • The heart of the city - full of life at its real best. There isn't a place in town where you will witness and experience simpler joys of life without putting in an ounce of effort. Open air restaurants, vendors selling delicious slushies made right in front of you, and that awesome corn on the cob guy unleashing his magic, the groups of mariachi bands serenading you with music from yesteryears and beyond. Hardworking women selling handicrafts, local jewelry, bookmarks, handy back massagers and more. Salsa / tango / merengue dance to live music with couples of all ages. With a backdrop of the beautiful cathedral. Nothing complicated. Simply - a good life.
  • While a little touristy, the great part are locals spending free time. People watching. Anti-tourists get over yourself. I did. LOL
  • Cool place to walk around and hang out, a lot going on like live music n different Mexican artisanal stuff.
  • All the time when I came to oaxaca its something do you remember for ever

Where to stay in Oaxaca

Oaxaca's size and diversity make it an especially good place to find budget-friendly accommodations, in particular youth hostels and family-run "posadas." These affordable options, along with mid-range and boutique hotels, line the cozy streets of Oaxaca's historic center, probably the most convenient area in the city. You can also find a decent range of options just north of the center, in the neighborhoods of La Paz and Guelaguetza.
