Landmark Tourist Spot
Formally named Plaza de la Constitucion, Zocalo dates back to the 16th century. Take a break from sightseeing and rest on the verdant tree-filled square, observe the lively atmosphere from a cafe, and people watch. Admire the grandiose colonial buildings that surround the square, paying special attention to the Baroque cathedral built of volcanic green stone, and the Gothic state government palace. • The heart of the city - full of life at its real best. There isn't a place in town where you will witness and experience simpler joys of life without putting in an ounce of effort. Open air restaurants, vendors selling delicious slushies made right in front of you, and that awesome corn on the cob guy unleashing his magic, the groups of mariachi bands serenading you with music from yesteryears and beyond. Hardworking women selling handicrafts, local jewelry, bookmarks, handy back massagers and more. Salsa / tango / merengue dance to live music with couples of all ages. With a backdrop of the beautiful cathedral. Nothing complicated. Simply - a good life.
  • While a little touristy, the great part are locals spending free time. People watching. Anti-tourists get over yourself. I did. LOL
  • Cool place to walk around and hang out, a lot going on like live music n different Mexican artisanal stuff.
  • A must place to visit. Tons of restaurants around and a very lively place itself. Events happen every week, there's tons of cart food, and the variety of people it draws only adds to the experience.
  • I love this zócalo. People watching is the best. Yes, you'll be pestered to buy stuff. Say, no gracias, and you're good. But occasionally say yes, because snacks are important. There are odd sights, if you pay attention. But it's the place to just sit a d relax. Protests, food, beggars, vendors - but everyone is so polite. Enjoy this wonderful space.
