  • In the Andador Macedonio Alcalá, we found a neat shop, where we will appreciate a good sample of alebrijes, quite different to the rest of the city. Because the alebrije is a a craft invented in the city of Mexico by Pedro Linares López in 1936, realized with the technique of cardboard and painted with bright and vibrant colors. Usually the alebrijes are imaginary beings consisting of physiognomic elements of different animals, a combination of various animals, not only fantastic but also real. But in the Oaxaca region carved in copal wood alebrijes are very popular and it is base of the economy of the towns of San Martín Tilcajete and San Antonio Arrazola, where many families work in the size of figures which then color with paint and They traded in the squares, markets and workshops in the region. The alebrije in this region is therefore a combination of the tradition of woodcarving in Oaxaca and the technique created by Linares. There are everywhere, in shops and on the street and all prices. But it is in this shop where they acquire a particular quality. And they are also part of the Oaxaca (and Mexico,) color in general.

Where to stay in Oaxaca

Oaxaca's size and diversity make it an especially good place to find budget-friendly accommodations, in particular youth hostels and family-run "posadas." These affordable options, along with mid-range and boutique hotels, line the cozy streets of Oaxaca's historic center, probably the most convenient area in the city. You can also find a decent range of options just north of the center, in the neighborhoods of La Paz and Guelaguetza.
