Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman, Oaxaca

4.9
#2 of 29 in Historic Sites in Southern Mexico
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Visit Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman, a prime example of New Spanish Baroque architecture dating back to the 16th century. Built during a period of over 200 years, the church has had quite a turbulent history, having suffered from earthquakes throughout the centuries. On the facade, which is flanked by two bell towers, find a statue of Santo Domingo de Guzman, who founded the Dominican order. Inside, there you can appreciate the liberal use of gold all throughout, which creates a warm atmosphere when candles are lit during evening mass. Put Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman and other Oaxaca attractions into our Oaxaca trip itinerary builder, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • This is an impressive (even if way too baroque for me) church, a must see while visiting Oaxaca. And don't miss the adjacent museum with the trésor of the tumb n7 of Monte Alban  more »

  • One of the most beautiful churches I have been to is Templo de Santo Domingo. Again - just like most things Oaxaca - I find it rather challenging to describe in words about the beauty of this church - both from the inside as well as from the outside. The square outside the church is a very popular hangout for the young and the hip and for the odd tourists as well. No matter what the time of the day or night - the vibe around the church is full of life and zest. There is no way you will miss this place if you are in town and go down the solitary walking street which leads from Zocollo to this church. And if you do miss it - you haven't been to Oaxaca.
  • The temple is well kept and have a very nice restoration. The convent by itself counts with marvelous views and different patios each one evoking a different feeling once there. The museum has various exhibitions nicely curated .
  • The museum is huge. The view is like out of the 1800s. They put the name of the city in big letters. The church is beautiful.
  • Beautiful building. Go to the museum. Hire a local guide (they hang out outside and offer their services). The guide is helpful, gives you a good foundation, and then you can wander on your own after. The church is also gorgeous.
  • This is one of Mexico's best examples of beautiful colonial churches, surrounded by equally beautifully old buildings and streets. A must-see if ever in the area.
