Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman, Oaxaca

4.9
Visit Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman, a prime example of New Spanish Baroque architecture dating back to the 16th century. Built during a period of over 200 years, the church has had quite a turbulent history, having suffered from earthquakes throughout the centuries. On the facade, which is flanked by two bell towers, find a statue of Santo Domingo de Guzman, who founded the Dominican order. Inside, there you can appreciate the liberal use of gold all throughout, which creates a warm atmosphere when candles are lit during evening mass. • So much gold you haven't seen in many buildings. It's very impressive. We just walked through with awe admiring the beauty of the church.  more »
  • It is a pity that Santo Domingo is a single-nave Church and has no character of Cathedral. Because it is much more beautiful than the current Cathedral. Paintings, altarpieces, the stained glass windows make up an impeccable aesthetic with a solemn and harmonious space. They can not let it pass.

  • Spectacular architecture. On the property there is the cathedral, plus an anthropological museum and botanical garden. All surrounded by a large grand wall. The entrance to the cathedral and museum is near the southwest corner of the block. The entrance to the botanical garden is near the southeast corner of the block. This is a must see if you're in Oaxaca City.
  • This templo is in the middle of everything. It has beautiful architecture! There are local art stands nearby and many restaurants and stores. Make sure to walk around the templo to see all of its beauty and the surrounding area!
  • One of the most beautiful churches I have been to is Templo de Santo Domingo. Again - just like most things Oaxaca - I find it rather challenging to describe in words about the beauty of this church - both from the inside as well as from the outside. The square outside the church is a very popular hangout for the young and the hip and for the odd tourists as well. No matter what the time of the day or night - the vibe around the church is full of life and zest. There is no way you will miss this place if you are in town and go down the solitary walking street which leads from Zocollo to this church. And if you do miss it - you haven't been to Oaxaca.
  • The temple is well kept and have a very nice restoration. The convent by itself counts with marvelous views and different patios each one evoking a different feeling once there. The museum has various exhibitions nicely curated .
  • The museum is huge. The view is like out of the 1800s. They put the name of the city in big letters. The church is beautiful.

Where to stay in Oaxaca

Oaxaca's size and diversity make it an especially good place to find budget-friendly accommodations, in particular youth hostels and family-run "posadas." These affordable options, along with mid-range and boutique hotels, line the cozy streets of Oaxaca's historic center, probably the most convenient area in the city. You can also find a decent range of options just north of the center, in the neighborhoods of La Paz and Guelaguetza.
