#1 of 34 in Shopping in Southern Mexico
Flea Market Historic Site
The oldest in Oaxaca, Mercado Benito Juárez has been operating since 1893. Experience a vibrant blend of sights and aromas as you wander the maze-like rows of stalls, which sell everything from fresh produce and local delicacies to souvenirs and handicrafts. Stock up on fresh meat, fish, and vegetables, browse the stalls selling aromatic herbs and spices, or order a fruit smoothie. The market is a good place to try iconic local street snacks, such as tamales, a string cheese called "quesillo," or chapulines, spicy fried grasshoppers. • This is more than just a farmers market. Shops selling simple things you may need for your day to day life - you will find here. Clothes, jewelry, mezcal, kitchenware, assorted meats, seafood, and more. There are lanes of shops selling similar kinds of products without any fear of competition. A must visit on your way to or from Mercado 20 de Noviembre.
  • Commerce at a very basic level, where all the necessary consumables of a typical family can be purchased. If you've never been in a traditional market, then you definitely have to go there. While at it, get yourself some custom-made chocolate, and try free samples of all sorts of different types of mezcal--the traditional alcoholic drink of this part of Mexico.
