Mercado Benito Juárez, Oaxaca

4.3
#1 of 18 in Shopping in Oaxaca
The oldest in Oaxaca, Mercado Benito Juárez has been operating since 1893. Experience a vibrant blend of sights and aromas as you wander the maze-like rows of stalls, which sell everything from fresh produce and local delicacies to souvenirs and handicrafts. Stock up on fresh meat, fish, and vegetables, browse the stalls selling aromatic herbs and spices, or order a fruit smoothie. The market is a good place to try iconic local street snacks, such as tamales, a string cheese called "quesillo," or chapulines, spicy fried grasshoppers. • Both markets (20 De Noviembre & Benito Juarez) are great for a walk, very colorful. The food is very tasty and you can try all the variety of typical dishes from Oaxaca.  more »

  • Amazing Market traditional and art design a lots of goods a lots of Trades almost everything you want is there
  • Nice market, probably more for the tourists than locals but definitely an interesting place to get lost for an hour. Once you're finished pop to the food market '20th Noviembre' for a bite to eat.
  • I strongly suggest to visit this market. The food is authentic and great. Good prices.
  • Is ok, good for tourist people
  • This is more than just a farmers market. Shops selling simple things you may need for your day to day life - you will find here. Clothes, jewelry, mezcal, kitchenware, assorted meats, seafood, and more. There are lanes of shops selling similar kinds of products without any fear of competition. A must visit on your way to or from Mercado 20 de Noviembre.

Where to stay in Oaxaca

Oaxaca's size and diversity make it an especially good place to find budget-friendly accommodations, in particular youth hostels and family-run "posadas." These affordable options, along with mid-range and boutique hotels, line the cozy streets of Oaxaca's historic center, probably the most convenient area in the city. You can also find a decent range of options just north of the center, in the neighborhoods of La Paz and Guelaguetza.
