Cathedral of Oaxaca, Oaxaca

4.2
#4 of 13 in Historic Sites in Oaxaca
Visit one of World Heritage-listed Oaxaca's most striking architectural sites at Cathedral of Oaxaca. Following the first groundbreaking in 1535, the massive cathedral took some 160 years to complete due to earthquake damage. The bold Baroque exterior features locally mined green caldera stone, the same as many other buildings in town. Inside, the neoclassical design includes an altar with a statue of Our Lady of the Assumption, crafted in Italy in the late 19th century, as well as a locally made pipe organ dating from 1711. With our custom trip planner, Oaxaca attractions like Cathedral of Oaxaca can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • It is the main church of Oaxaca, located in the zocalo where many people like to walk and can get to know her.

  • Unmissable, the Cathedral is imposing, in a classic Oaxacan "Dominican" color. When you walk through the front doors first thing you find is the choir, what makes you walk the halls, I love the breathing of copal and great candles burning.

  • Morning stop in the courtyard, and we were stilled by the beauty of the space. The coffee was superb - rich, creamy top, deep tone with a whisper of cinnamon. Huevos en salsa were a delight and waffles with cream and fruit compote were excellently prepared. Live music drifted in as we relaxed in the bold space of the courtyard. Enjoy!
  • The service was outstanding! We had a late reservation for 10 pm, and the entire staff went above and beyond for us! It was my mom's birthday, they brought out an amazing cake for her and wished her happy birthday. I will be returning!!
  • Very very expansive but so good food and amaizing place in a pacio open to the sky
  • Nice restaurant. Great local food.

Where to stay in Oaxaca

Oaxaca's size and diversity make it an especially good place to find budget-friendly accommodations, in particular youth hostels and family-run "posadas." These affordable options, along with mid-range and boutique hotels, line the cozy streets of Oaxaca's historic center, probably the most convenient area in the city. You can also find a decent range of options just north of the center, in the neighborhoods of La Paz and Guelaguetza.
