Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico City

4.5
Visit a hilltop basilica overlooking the city to see Virgin of Guadalupe, a sacred work of art and object of Catholic pilgrimage. The aspect of the Virgin Mary reportedly appeared before an Aztec convert to Roman Catholicism in 1531. The Virgin performed a miracle, producing flowers in the depth of winter, and a priest who witnessed the event demanded a church be built on the spot immediately. The current basilica dates from 1976 and displays a striking circular design. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Mexico City trip simple and quick.

  • I thought spend an hour but I couldn't leave! This site is wonderful, we go to meditate, pray or just visit and admire the gardens and buildings, worth the detour! Beyond the new ultra modern and impressive basilica, there is plenty to see including the old basilica with the rich decorations, the lined lush gardens with flowers and trees, fountains, chapels, which have a lot of history, etc... You will find a way of the cross impressive by its modernism, a statue of the Virgin in a plan d, great water and, don't miss the ascent to reach the chapel located at the top of the site, the beauty of the scenery is worth the visit.

Where to stay in Mexico City

Head straight to the trendy neighborhoods of Roma or La Condesa if you're looking for an artsy atmosphere--you can find design-conscious hostels and boutique hotels nestled among the many bars, restaurants, cafes, and galleries. For easy access to the city's most beautiful architecture, you can't beat staying in the historical center, although the neighborhood's UNESCO-listing means you'll only find smaller, old-fashioned options there. You can also indulge in a few luxury nights in the fancy Polanco district, or look for a more budget-friendly option in the popular Zona Rosa.
