Plaza Garibaldi, Mexico City

2.5
#17 of 118 in Sightseeing in Mexico City
Landmark Tourist Spot
Discover the center of mariachi music at Plaza Garibaldi, a historic square closely linked with Mexican folk music. Stemming from the golden age of Mexican cinema from the 1930s to the 1950s, when scenes set in the square would show leading men singing mariachi songs to their love interests, mariachi bands fill the square with song. Watch the bands play and sing in traditional dress, along with jarochos playing folks songs from Veracruz, and norteno bands playing music from the north of the country. Though rejuvenated and revitalized in recent years, the square still has a seedy reputation, so watch out for scammers and thieves targeting tourists. • We went through this plaza during a day and there was not much to see. A lot of homeless people, police and nobody else. It felt safe, but, really, not much to see.  more »
  • This place is fabulous, we ended our sightseeing day at this place and it was perfect wonderful restaurants delicious food and the live mariachi music is awesome!  more »
  • Our AirB&B host recommended it. Restaurant charged over the odds for beers and food. The margaritas were insipid. Not enough tequila, too much margarita mix, and the most expensive in 9 weeks in Mexic...  more »

  • The restaurant/bar La Tequileria is OK to drink at, but the food is only OK. I went on Friday and Saturday. I wanted to video record a lot of the mariachis playing. On my second night the bar cheated me 50 pesos on the charge. I watched the money from waiter to the bar and back. The waiter didn't steal the money. It was the people behind the bar. When the waiter was on his way to bring back the change one of the ladies behind the bar stopped the waiter and was talking to him in a very strong and mean manor. He gave me the change but it was short 50 pesos and no receipt was returned to me. I didn't feel like arguing since it seemed like nobody spoke any English there.
  • Very interesting place. Great spot to relax and have a beer or two. The food I had wasn't great but there are many options. The novelty of the place is really the DOZENS of mariachi groups singing everywhere. They will play just for you, whatever you request. Beautiful music.
  • Hidden prices. They offer moderate prices of booze but rip you of in the end with their awful live show. It definitely sucks. Avoid it.
  • All the fun begins after 8pm. Mexican musicians everywhere. They are there to play your song requests.
  • Here you can find stores and things to buy. But the main attraction here are the Mariachi players and the museum of Tequila and Mezcal.
