Plaza Garibaldi, Mexico City

Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
2.4/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web
Discover the center of mariachi music at Plaza Garibaldi, a historic square closely linked with Mexican folk music. Stemming from the golden age of Mexican cinema from the 1930s to the 1950s, when scenes set in the square would show leading men singing mariachi songs to their love interests, mariachi bands fill the square with song. Watch the bands play and sing in traditional dress, along with jarochos playing folks songs from Veracruz, and norteno bands playing music from the north of the country. Though rejuvenated and revitalized in recent years, the square still has a seedy reputation, so watch out for scammers and thieves targeting tourists. • There were 7 friends, sit in a bar overlooking the plaza and there listened to mariachis and then we sang, each song is charged by 100 mexicanos

  • This square, located in the historic center but not so close to the other downtown attractions, is the place where you find the mariachis. Many groups, very peculiar and very Mexican. I would not recommend staying long, but if you have a touch of folklore that makes it special.

  • You can't go to Mexico without that experience. With a touch of feeling of insecurity, you deal with mariachis and people to persuade you to enter premises, is really uncomfortable. There is an area of food which has many popular restaurants, I had no chance to try, but in the next if I will do it.

  • DANGEROUS.....................NO STAR FOR THIS PLACE.... Do not enter this place... full of thieves. Don´t accept credit card. Don´t give factura. The phone number given by them is wrong. You will pay double of what is mentioned in menu.
  • The place is great fun, loads of Mariachi bands and places to have a drink. But be aware, the area can be dangerous so try to go as simple as possible (a camera and a bit of cash only).
  • Loved it. Lots of fun. We were with a large group of locals though and only bought bottles. It was easy to keep track of the bill. This place is known for padding the bill and our friends kept an eye on us. Parking is under the Plaza and as long as you are with others it is a fine place to be (going from the bar to parking) but don't walk around or go to any places advertised by the sellers in the square. The mariachi were great.
  • A traditional spot to enjoy the mariachis and have some drinks, but be very careful to not wander out of the touristic plaza and keep an eye on the prices, it's very common to overcharge visitors.
  • Do not visit La Tequilera. You will be greeted and provided with false information saying no cover. The information provided on the menu has hidden fees and are added at the end. You basically pay for the show and other fees.
