Plaza Garibaldi, Mexico City

2.5
Discover the center of mariachi music at Plaza Garibaldi, a historic square closely linked with Mexican folk music. Stemming from the golden age of Mexican cinema from the 1930s to the 1950s, when scenes set in the square would show leading men singing mariachi songs to their love interests, mariachi bands fill the square with song. Watch the bands play and sing in traditional dress, along with jarochos playing folks songs from Veracruz, and norteno bands playing music from the north of the country. Though rejuvenated and revitalized in recent years, the square still has a seedy reputation, so watch out for scammers and thieves targeting tourists. • It was a pleasant experience to visit the plaza Garibaldi, a way to learn about Mexican culture and its music. The cantina that I liked most was the Tenampa.

  • I expected much more from the site. We were offered to enter a mariachi show in La Magalena without paying for the entry. We traveled with 2 girls and so entered and ask a few drinks. We delay us 30 minutes and we ask for the account. They brought us an account for 760 pesos and in fact were 360. They tried to convince us several times with several accounts by lowering the price and put bad temper to allow the price which was played. They must be very careful with this kind of practice that then I know that they are common in this area.

  • The area smell ugly. Also we went to the restaurant in the Museum of Tequila and Mezcal, was asked to the waiter 57 Aztec without chile soup since I am allergic. Are you indicated previously and what he did was bring the soup diluted in water. In the end I did not know anything and always felt the chile. It seems to me that it was very irresponsible. He was called to tell him the soup and they did not accept guilt. They said that they didn't have soup with chile and they wouldn't be it us to change. In the end always they claimed it us. Very badly done.

  • Club at Garibaldi was fun. Garibaldi square is a bit chaotic and it could definitely need more security and police presence. Love the Mariachis though and the many vendors.
  • A great place to see and listen to real life Mariachi. Although, the surrounding area is a little dodgy. I recommend getting off the Metro at Belles Artes station and walking down. If you go out the wrong exit of Garibaldi station it is very rough.
  • really nice place to spend a few hours in a evening. the mariachi are everywhere and you can pay for them to play at your table if you want to. there are some lovely places to eat there. i highly recommend it for a joyous evening out.
  • The House of Mariachi! Happy place to enjoy live Mexican music and twisting brains mezcal inside a shared party atmosphere. Ask for prices before hiring. Note: Surrounding areas are not safe. Avoid wandering outside the square or stablished places.
  • Very interesting place. Came on a weekday night and the crowds that are common on weekends were not there. There are hundreds of mariachi walking around trying to get you to pay for a song. Area seems a bit dangerous, so I would not wander around much unless with locals.

Where to stay in Mexico City

Head straight to the trendy neighborhoods of Roma or La Condesa if you're looking for an artsy atmosphere--you can find design-conscious hostels and boutique hotels nestled among the many bars, restaurants, cafes, and galleries. For easy access to the city's most beautiful architecture, you can't beat staying in the historical center, although the neighborhood's UNESCO-listing means you'll only find smaller, old-fashioned options there. You can also indulge in a few luxury nights in the fancy Polanco district, or look for a more budget-friendly option in the popular Zona Rosa.
