Leon Trotsky Museum, Mexico City

4.3
See the original home where Leon Trotsky lived in hiding and was eventually killed in 1940 at Leon Trotsky Museum. The site has transformed the home into a museum dedicated to the life of the Russian Marxist politician. Observe the house as it was at that time of his death, particularly the study in which Ramón Mercader brutally murdered him. Stroll through the outside garden overshadowed by watchtowers where Trotsky's tomb--containing his ashes and engraved with a hammer and sickle--lies. • Since I have been to the Frida Kahlo museum and Diego Rivera, I thought it would be great to see the 3rd dimension since they were all linked in some way ! The amount of photos on display was credible...  more »
  • Site with information, however recommend a visit with museum guides. The wealth of detail narrated by they extend MUCH the experience of the visit. There is a timeline of events in the World context during the period described.

  • Forget the art museums. Trotsky's House is to revere the revolutionaries who gave their lives for a better world. The House is preserved as when the death of the thinker, reflecting the austerity (and a certain air of clausura) with him and your family lived.

  • Well preserved historic house turned fortress by Trotsky and his staff. Kinda small but worth it. Nice garden.
  • Well maintained building, garden and museum, reminding of dramatic historic events that probably changed the world. Definitly worth a visit.
  • If you're near the Frida museum don't miss the chance to go to Trotsky museum. The place seems to conserve original items. However more information should be provided to those who don't know very much about Trotsky. life
  • Find a piece of Russia in the city. Although the home looks very rural you have to remember this house was built when the local area was only just a village. Research before you come so you can really appreciate what he was about and why this is his resting place.
  • V cool seeing Trotsky's house but really would have benefitted from having an English speaking guide walking us round the place. Reading plaques can only give you so much info. Entry was super cheap, 60 peso. The museum is TINY, can be seen, done and gone to the loo is less than 40min. Go if you're planning to go to Frida Kahlo's museum anyway, it's only a couple of blocks away.

Where to stay in Mexico City

Head straight to the trendy neighborhoods of Roma or La Condesa if you're looking for an artsy atmosphere--you can find design-conscious hostels and boutique hotels nestled among the many bars, restaurants, cafes, and galleries. For easy access to the city's most beautiful architecture, you can't beat staying in the historical center, although the neighborhood's UNESCO-listing means you'll only find smaller, old-fashioned options there. You can also indulge in a few luxury nights in the fancy Polanco district, or look for a more budget-friendly option in the popular Zona Rosa.
