This is an authentic Mexican market selling anything you can think of. It is easy to get there with the subway - will take you to the centre of the market. There are hundreds of stalls selling the sam...  more »

This is not a fancy shopping mall. But it is so authentic - the taste, the sounds, the smell, the people. I was looking for candy and mole sauce to take back home. The person I travelled with had neve...  more »

If you are not afraid of crowds, rats, cats and birds in a closed place, or the ugly hookers placed in front of the market, go for it as well. The market is charming, full of fruit and vegetables put in an order very inviting. Bags of chilies and beans of all types. Super cheap prices. The sellers very helpful. Is not as dangerous as the show guides. You can safely enter and you will come out alive and with so many tasty things. Outside, on the market there are stalls with sweets.

This market has unusual esoteric goods for sale for cheap. It is a feast for the eyes. They also sell animals that seem unhappy to be there packed into small cages or too young to be away from their mothers. That part is sad. Don't even wear a chain around your neck or earings if you go here. My gold chain was ripped off my neck. It was still worth going for the unique cultural experience.

Exciting, vibrant and hectic - an assault on the senses - in a good way. Spent the whole day, guided by locals, touring this massive market, checking out all the amazing food and wares. Was told to be careful here, but we never had any problems - just stay alert - but you you can easily lose your way and sense of direction. When snapping photos, try not to get in the way of people working and going about their daily lives. So many amazing food stalls here. One of the best experiences I had in the CDMX.

It is huge. And super intimidating. If you grew up in Asia and have been to wet markets.. It's a super sized version. I really wanted to try some of the street food, but there were too many flies, dirt etc I didn't dare!

This is a massive, sprawling and crowded market that could be best described as organized chaos, but it is well worth the visit. Whether or not you speak Spanish I recommend taking a guided tour (or know a local)... We took the tour with Eat Mexico and the guide and tour were excellent.

Where to stay in Mexico City

Head straight to the trendy neighborhoods of Roma or La Condesa if you're looking for an artsy atmosphere--you can find design-conscious hostels and boutique hotels nestled among the many bars, restaurants, cafes, and galleries. For easy access to the city's most beautiful architecture, you can't beat staying in the historical center, although the neighborhood's UNESCO-listing means you'll only find smaller, old-fashioned options there. You can also indulge in a few luxury nights in the fancy Polanco district, or look for a more budget-friendly option in the popular Zona Rosa.
