Plaza Grande, Merida
(4.5/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
Plaza Grande represents a main gathering point in the heart of the city. The former Spanish "Plaza de Armas," it was built on the site of the ancient Mayan city of T'ho and named after the eponymous town in Spain. Rest in the shade of tall laurel trees that line the verdant square, or admire the historic buildings that surround it, with stuccoed pastel-colored facades. View the antique cathedral, one of the oldest in North America, people-watch, or take in the square's busy atmosphere. Add Plaza Grande to your Merida travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Merida tourist route planner.

  • There are five buildings emblematic and all are free in the square, Cathedral, a Museum, Government Palace, Palace of the municipality and House of montejo, all of them are very interesting and you should not miss them. In the square there is a sign of giant and colorful lyrics with the word MÉRIDA. and at night there is always some regional dance, works or any outdoor free cultural activity.

  • Always something to do or see here. On Sundays it's extra busy when the square is filled with places to eat. Go there on a Thursday night (iirc) to see a cool recreation of the ancient Maya ball game.
  • Laid back atmosphere, great tasting traditional food with an inexpensive price
  • Muchas pokeparadas? :P También muchos portales de ingress.
  • A beautiful place, one of many parks in the city of Merida
