Plaza Grande, Merida

4.5
Plaza Grande represents a main gathering point in the heart of the city. The former Spanish "Plaza de Armas," it was built on the site of the ancient Mayan city of T'ho and named after the eponymous town in Spain. Rest in the shade of tall laurel trees that line the verdant square, or admire the historic buildings that surround it, with stuccoed pastel-colored facades. View the antique cathedral, one of the oldest in North America, people-watch, or take in the square's busy atmosphere. • One of the most beautiful and lively colonial squares in Mexico, with the usual central garden and historic palaces around.

  • A must visit place to visit because it is the historic center of the city, the heart of Merida and from there you can leave for other places.

  • Very busy central square with merchants, lots of walkers, a nice place to stop for a moment on a bench.

  • Lovely park. Be sure to visit on a Sunday when there are extra seating areas and food stalls, music and entertainment. It’s a well maintained and beautiful park in front of the old cathedral. Got your Instagram letters to get you photo fix, lots of seating, a flag. It’s worth a wander. Also check out the covered walkway beside the catheter as they often display art to the public in there. The square is missing some nice cafes around the edge, unfortunately the best spots are occupied by a 7eleven, subway and a couple of dodgy diner looking places
  • Beautiful local square with lots of places to sit back and people watch!! Make sure to go in the evenings and check out all the activities that happen there on weekends and during certain times of the year where special festivals are held! There are also lots of street vendors selling a variety of different local desserts and cuisine’s. be aware of the high volume of traffic and people waking very quickly. The cathedral is spectacular and you can walk in and respectfully look around. I was saddened to see the large amounts of garbage in the city although there are cans everywhere the locals don’t seem to care too much about littering!
  • Great place to relax in the center of town. If you're driving like we did, plenty of places to park really cheap. Near lots of food and shopping, prepare to spend the day and take in the local history.
  • Loved the horse carriage ride. The church is very old and it shows, but that is part of its charm.
  • Beautiful downtown Merida. Lots of very nice old buildings, restaurants, museums and the cathedral. Local activities in the evening. A very nice projection on the cathedral facade some days, check the days that the show is on.
