We had been intending to have breakfast at the market, fortunately decided to do so somewhere else before you get there. I say it was fortunately because the entire market is very dirty, the floors, the walls, locals, absolutely everything looks and smells bad. I don't know how would be before this place but at least now is not worth visiting it, at least not in tourist way.

Enormous central market. Very local so not many English speakers. Crowded but safe. Locals come to buy the freshest fruit, vegetables and spices. There are multiple sections, cookware, produce, butchers and seafood with little street food stands (though I would take care regarding the hygiene with the cooking stalls but their fresh produce is awesome). The best part is the fresh vegetable section. Some of the wet market sections can be a bit intimidating though.

This combined with the adjacent Market San Benito creates the enormous central marketplace in Merida. You can easily spend an hour or two wandering through here. It's not "nice" and its definitely not touristy, but it is well worth the visit.

A great local market to visit and eat cochinita and some yucatecan food, not commercial and tourist place but if you want to feel like a yucatecan, you have to visit it. Also local fruits you can get there like yuca, tauch, grosellas, local mango, dragon fruit, etc.

Where to stay in Merida

Yucatan's capital and cultural hub offers a range of accommodations concentrated almost entirely around its historical center, offering convenient access to the architectural marvels and museums that make the city a popular destination. Look in the streets surrounding Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan for some basic but perfectly located budget-friendly options. If the center feels too full of tourists, head north to the less frenetic neighborhood of Montes de Ame, where you can find some laidback private rentals.
