Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, Merida

4.6
Step back in time on a tour of Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, an 18th century agave plant estate. The farm is still functional, having been restored in the 1980s, and is dedicated to promoting sustainability. More than 80 Mayan families work on the farm. Explore the main house to see how a rich agave plantation owner used to live, ride on wooden platform trucks and admire the spacious estate, and see first-hand the process of transforming the plant into ropes, sacks, and yarn. After the tour, you can bathe in the crystal clear waters of the natural underground cenotes, or enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine at the restaurant. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Merida holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Hacienda Sotuta de Peon and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • This Hacienda just keeps improving. This was the fourth visit I have made to the grounds as every time guests come for a visit I take them here. The staff are constantly making improvements and this t...  more »
  • The price of 550 MXD per person seemed us really high (or even exorbitant) to visit a hacienda and its sisal fields but we decided to try our luck. We were not disappointed. 3 hours of visit conducted masterfully by Jorge. A passionate, smiling, available guide and mastering 3 languages (at least). Incredibly informative and really exciting, you are charmed by the beginning at the end of the visit. Everything is neat and well thought-out. A tour that ends - for those who want - by swimming in a magnificent cenote totally buried (the property into account 8 said Jorge!) ... What prevents you not then take advantage of the pool.

  • A fascinating tour of a hacienda which produced sisal in the era of "green gold". The process of turning the sisal plant into rope is demonstrated using original techniques. The tour includes the hacienda, a view of the fields, and a swim in a cenote. Well worth the 3 hours the tour takes.
  • Such a beautiful place full of nature and with a very peculiar real system! I really enjoyed the delicious buffet (the cochinita is excellent and the tortillas are handmade). The pool is very refreshing and everyone is a fantastic service.
  • Wonderful Day ...lots of information. ..very interesting & the mules & horses seem to be so well taken care of...the buffet lunch had enough choices for vegans such the 3 of us are Thank you I will recommend
  • We came to Sotuta de Peon looking for a cenote and found a tour. The tour includes a demonstration of making tequila, a walk through a hacienda, with a short stay at their private cenote. The cost was about 500 MXN per person. Look elsewhere if you want a more casual swimming experience.
