Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, Merida
(4.7/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Step back in time on a tour of Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, an 18th century agave plant estate. The farm is still functional, having been restored in the 1980s, and is dedicated to promoting sustainability. More than 80 Mayan families work on the farm. Explore the main house to see how a rich agave plantation owner used to live, ride on wooden platform trucks and admire the spacious estate, and see first-hand the process of transforming the plant into ropes, sacks, and yarn. After the tour, you can bathe in the crystal clear waters of the natural underground cenotes, or enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine at the restaurant.
