Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, Merida

4.8
Step back in time on a tour of Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, an 18th century agave plant estate. The farm is still functional, having been restored in the 1980s, and is dedicated to promoting sustainability. More than 80 Mayan families work on the farm. Explore the main house to see how a rich agave plantation owner used to live, ride on wooden platform trucks and admire the spacious estate, and see first-hand the process of transforming the plant into ropes, sacks, and yarn. After the tour, you can bathe in the crystal clear waters of the natural underground cenotes, or enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine at the restaurant. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Merida holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Hacienda Sotuta de Peon and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Unique in its kind, with all the processes and the continuous production of henequén (Sisal) your service is very professional with all the comforts of international tourism in its treatment and facilities. There is a special discount if you're local and you do a reservation early by phone. The restaurant service is very good and great quality. It is a great achievement and very useful visit for the whole family. We went with babies and we had no problems, provided your arms support them. Since entering stroller it is not option. Recommended for all ages.

Great place where you back in time at the beginning of the 20th century! Henequen or sisal is the main actor of this work. It's not cheap at all but at the end it is worthwhile.

Where to stay in Merida

Yucatan's capital and cultural hub offers a range of accommodations concentrated almost entirely around its historical center, offering convenient access to the architectural marvels and museums that make the city a popular destination. Look in the streets surrounding Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan for some basic but perfectly located budget-friendly options. If the center feels too full of tourists, head north to the less frenetic neighborhood of Montes de Ame, where you can find some laidback private rentals.
