Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, Merida

#5 of 113 in Things to do in Merida
Tourist Spot Ranch
Step back in time on a tour of Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, an 18th century agave plant estate. The farm is still functional, having been restored in the 1980s, and is dedicated to promoting sustainability. More than 80 Mayan families work on the farm. Explore the main house to see how a rich agave plantation owner used to live, ride on wooden platform trucks and admire the spacious estate, and see first-hand the process of transforming the plant into ropes, sacks, and yarn. After the tour, you can bathe in the crystal clear waters of the natural underground cenotes, or enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine at the restaurant. • It is a tour of the ranch where you show how they have been modernized techniques to remove the sisal fiber. Is very interesting, excellent service, very well explained and ends the journey in a beautiful cenote where you can get for an hour. Highly recommended

  • The hacienda is in very good condition and is very nice, but the guide is a bit fast, to make the journey. The cenote is small, pristine, is better if you visit in the off-season or is impossible to enjoy. The food was good, but not extraordinary. The cost of the ride is a little high, since not even pick up or stop at your hotel, but I still liked the ride.

  • The experience that you do not expect.! After days of archaeological sites was a little suspicious about this deviation. The attraction was well above my expectations. An ancient farm converted into upscale tourist site. Good local help (I believe it's called Ivan) to go back to the times of the industrial production of the strings through the processing of agave leaves (machinery still working!) Private bathroom in the Cenote. Even if you get tired, try to find the strength and the time to take a dip in the beautiful swimming pool before dinner: he deserves it. Then, Margarita at poolside and dinner. The most excellent experience.

  • Great place where you back in time at the beginning of the 20th century! Henequen or sisal is the main actor of this work. It's not cheap at all but at the end it is worthwhile.
