Gran Museo del Mundo Maya, Merida
(4.1/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web)
History buffs in particular should not miss Gran Museo del Mundo Maya. Established in 2012, the museum was designed by a group of local architects. The spacious, modern building was designed to represent the sacred Ceiba tree, which the Mayans believed connected the living with the heavens and the underworld. Inside, you can admire a vast collection of more than 1,000 Mayan relics grouped into four halls with different themes. View well-preserved sculptures, artifacts, and objects retrieved from the ruins of Ek Balam, a traditional 8th-century Mayan village. • The Museum is huge, but it is difficult to understand if you do not speak Spanish. Interactive explanations are not captioned. We go out with the impression that the Spaniards colonized Mexico without any violence and that everything went well past. Basically 150 pesos it's cheap to get out no more advanced.

  • Perhaps my comment is risky because I know few museums with that architecture, but it gave me the impression of being in a Mall, in terms of its Tower seems a copy of "the bird's nest" Stadium in Beijing; is pretty true, but missing that aura of mysticism that surrounds the museums, very little content for big building, its rooms are small, lack qualified staff, if you know little or nothing of the Maya because I tell you that you will be in the same to visit this Museum; but well, it is worth visiting it, I do not think that there is another one of its kind in the country.

  • the Museum is not the best... few pieces, in disorder without a logic of attraction for the user. cinemas almost no programming.

  • Interesting museum, worth a visit. Price 150 pesos; you will easily spend 2-3 hours inside. Not much about history, but a lot from a cultural point of view, about Maya in the modern society. The only historical part is about the extinction of dinosaurs. Don't forget the Maya horoscope! 😁
  • The museum is very small, I mean surprisingly small. The content that is there is in both English and Spanish which is a nice touch. Also, most exhibits have very many interactive elements so this is really a well done museum. Just wish it had more to show.
  • It has a different approach. The best of the Maya world is in Mexico city, at the museo de antropologia. But this is a very good museum
  • Great architectural landmark to see, but relatively limited museum. Worth a visit but not a top priority in Merida. Consider also the 150MXN price tag.
  • Amazing new museum dedicated to the Maya culture and the natural history of the Yucatan. Parking is underground and enters from the back. I suggest you go as early as possible in the day as you are able to have the entire place to yourself for the first hour or so of opening. Lots of school groups in the afternoon. Expect to take about three hours to properly appreciate all that is on offer here. The gift shop prices are in the higher ranges although some of the artisan works available are truly unique and of the highest quality.
