Gran Museo del Mundo Maya, Merida

4.2
#1 of 27 in Museums in Yucatan
History buffs in particular should not miss Gran Museo del Mundo Maya. Established in 2012, the museum was designed by a group of local architects. The spacious, modern building was designed to represent the sacred Ceiba tree, which the Mayans believed connected the living with the heavens and the underworld. Inside, you can admire a vast collection of more than 1,000 Mayan relics grouped into four halls with different themes. View well-preserved sculptures, artifacts, and objects retrieved from the ruins of Ek Balam, a traditional 8th-century Mayan village. • Gave a good picture of the time, when the Spaniards arrived in Mexico and how the two cultures is part of the living Maya and society/culture today. More about missed time before and how they lived with customs, etc. Lacked several places English translations. Was an irrelevant exhibition on dinosaurs at the beginning of the exhibition. A little disappointing and room for improvement.

  • Interesting museum. A little way out of central Mérida, but easily reachable in a taxi (around 80-100 pesos) or bus (8 pesos). Firstly, the building is GORGEOUS. The exhibits themselves were really we...  more »
  • It is a great Museum that allows to have a very full picture of the Maya culture, highlights their specific areas of Maya of yesterday, today Maya and ancient Mayan.

  • Decent museum but most of it is replicas outside of the Mayan antiques. It looks bigger from the outside but it is mostly office space. For the price tag, you may consider other actual Mayan sites.
  • Great museum to become acquainted with the Mayan culture and history! Friendly and helpful staff. Interesting exhibits that used all types of media to explain the history of the area. I highly recommend it if you are interested in the culture, history and geography of the region.
  • Weak. Not that impressive. The best way to do it is go there with time and read everything... the history is good but the display pieces are not really anything. Also a lot of it is not in English and the translator obviously is not a fluent English speaker.
  • The museum is very small, I mean surprisingly small. The content that is there is in both English and Spanish which is a nice touch. Also, most exhibits have very many interactive elements so this is really a well done museum. Just wish it had more to show.
  • Interesting museum, worth a visit. Price 150 pesos; you will easily spend 2-3 hours inside. Not much about history, but a lot from a cultural point of view, about Maya in the modern society. The only historical part is about the extinction of dinosaurs. Don't forget the Maya horoscope! 😁

Where to stay in Merida

Yucatan's capital and cultural hub offers a range of accommodations concentrated almost entirely around its historical center, offering convenient access to the architectural marvels and museums that make the city a popular destination. Look in the streets surrounding Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan for some basic but perfectly located budget-friendly options. If the center feels too full of tourists, head north to the less frenetic neighborhood of Montes de Ame, where you can find some laidback private rentals.
